Career Goals:
If it means ski career- WIN olympics. If it means work career- no idea yet, I'm sure I'll figure something out along the way
How did you get involved in cross-country skiing?
My parents put me on skis when I was just a small child, and I grew to love them.
How did you balance high school academics with athletics?
I don't really know, high school was pretty easy I guess, I don't really remember much. I'm assuming I didn't think it was too important. And it helped that most of my teachers appreciated my athleticism.
School Average: 83
What is a typical training day?
A typical training day includes waking up and eating a wholesome breakfast of various nutritionally rich foods. Training (could be any of a number of activities a skier would take part in. example: skiing of course, roller-skiing, running, etc. etc.) Then it's lunch time! Lunch is great, I get to relax and replenishing my energy deprived body. Then after that it varies, sometimes I have two workouts, sometimes I don't. A higher power decides which one it is. Sometimes when I have a job the events previously transcribed get pushed around a little but I stays pretty similar.
When not skiing I am likely? I don't even know the answer to this. A lot of different things. But I do have a interest in graphic design.
When finished skiing I want to? Haven't thought that far ahead yet. I'm not really one to map out my future. Someone once told me to "follow my heart" so I'll see where it goes when the time comes.
Favourite Vacation Spot? Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (It's... I don't think there is an adjective to fully describe it, so I'll leave it at that)
Favourite Book? The Joy of Cooking.
Favourite Movie? It's a tie between Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption, oh and the Lion King
Favourite Competition Venue: Sovereign Lake
Favourite Olympic/Paralympic Moment? All of them.
Inspiration? The feeling of standing on the top of the podium.
Favourite Colour? I've told many people many different colours so I don't think I have one in particular.
If I had to do maintenance on my car what could I do? Change the oil and filters, past that I would hand it off to my dad.
Before a race, I will listen to what song? Till I Collapse - 50 cent, Tupac, Eminem
Favourite Muscian? Buddy MacMaster |

Congratulations to all our Olympic Athletes!

As we reflect on Canada's nation-defining Olympic Games, Cross Country Canada wishes to congratulate the entire Olympic team for its record breaking results at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The team made a truly spectacular effort and recorded best-ever finishes in four cross-country skiing events including several notable top-10 finishes. Ivan Babikov was 5th in the men's 30-km pursuit followed closely by George Grey (8th), Alex Harvey (9th), and Devon Kershaw (16th). Alex Harvey and Devon Kershaw also finished 4th in the team sprint.
Meanwhile Sara Renner and Dasha Gaiazova finished a respectable 7th place in the Ladies Team sprint and Sara Renner posted a personal best in the women's 15-km pursuit race, placing 10th. The team also celebrated the final race in Sara's illustrious racing career which spanned 4 Olympics after her 16th place in the 30-km Classic Mass start. As a grand finale to the Games, the team put up an amazing performance in the men's 50-km mass start with several athletes skiing in the lead group and nail-biting finishes by Devon Kershaw in 5th place (just 0.6 seconds from the podium) and George Grey in 18th. This was the strongest team that CCC has ever had the privilege of sending to the Olympics. Cross Country Canada would especially like to recognize Brian McKeever for becoming the first winter sport athlete to qualify for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The whole team made us proud and congratulations for these historic results!

Club Profile: Menihek Nordic Ski Club Honors Gerry Rideout for his 25 Years as President
(by Beatrice Whittle/Gary Peckham)
Gerry took over as president of Menihek Nordic Ski Club in 1984 and through his leadership, love, determination and dedication to the club, it has become known as one of the best facilities in Eastern Canada.
Gerry is always looking for ways to improve the club, be it trails work, ski rental facility, lighted trail system, the chalet, new groomers and most importantly the Junior Development program within the club, not just in Labrador City and Wabush, but provincially and throughout the country.
His hard work and dedication was recognized recently when a surprise party was held in his honor to mark his 25 consecutive years of leadership and dedication to the club and the sport of cross-country skiing.
Among the surprises of the evening was the presence of Gerry's 85 years old dad, Robert Rideout, Colinn Jardine, who was Gerry's mentor back in the early days and also his good friend, Judy May, long time friend, coach of NL Provincial Cross Country Ski Team and long time executive member of Cross Country Newfoundland and Labrador. Also present were his many friends and long time members of the ski club.
Gerry was presented with a plaque renaming the Ski Chalet in his honor "Rideout's Chalet", he also received a hand painted and hand blown bowl, depicting the club, ski trails and Northern Lights and also a collage painting done by Irene Rice, local artist, which shows the many accomplishes of Gerry's hard work for Menihek Nordic Ski Club through the years. |

Volunteer of The Month: Rheal Laviolette - Les Adventuriers de Charlo, NB
(by Chastity DeGroot & Reginald Vienneau)
In our ski club we have been fortunate to have an abundance of volunteers. There are many that we can call upon for help during times of need. However, there is one individual that stands out amongst them all, someone who seems to be always around when you need him. He inconspicuously ensures that everything runs smoothly and is ready on time. Members and visitors alike see him around but few realize just how much work he does and has been doing for so many years. Rheal Laviolette is the man that ensures our lit trail has functioning lights, that our roofs don't cave in from too much snow, that our trails are maintained, that all the machinery is operating as it should, etc.., Often he misses his own ski time to complete the work that is so necessary. He provided us with a speaker system on our lit trail and at the start/finish area. He gets his most pleasure out of providing opportunities for athletes to compete, never saying no to be the TD/organizer for a local race. Rheal Laviolette is someone who has had a great love for our sport. For all this, we thank you Rheal and offer you the recognition that you so much deserve but never seek out! Thank you, it hardly seems to say enough! |
