Club Spotlight: North Highlands Nordic, Nova Scotia (credit: Daniel Murray)
The winter weather of Northern Cape Breton is very similar to her people. With a laid back pace, it never really arrives on time, and the visit is so enjoyable that it takes its time to leave. Skiing at North Highlands Nordic gets rolling in mid December and runs strongly until early April with generous snowfalls and fantastic scenery.
North Highlands Nordic thrives despite the outmigration of residents heading westward for work. This can be attributed to many factors such as a fun trail layout that was designed for the 1987 Canada Games & 1989 Junior Nationals, more visits from people from away, increased memberships, dedicated volunteers, diverse social activities such as Seniors on Skis & moonlight skis, Nova Scotia's only ski marathon, and a booming jackrabbit program (half of the local elementary school population!). All are welcome to North Highlands to enjoy the unique beauty of Northern Cape Breton and her friendly people. |
Para-Nordic Profile: CCC's Para-Nordic High Performance System Review Launched with National Workshop Held June 24-25 (credit: Stéphane Barrette)
The High Performance Committee of Cross Country Canada has embarked on a review of the Canadian high performance system for able-bodied and Para-Nordic cross country ski athletes with the intent of establishing a long term strategic plan to 2018. The overall objectives of this review are to:
1) determine the most efficient HP system that will facilitate the achievement of the high performance long term performance goals; and
2) provide a framework to enable all contributing partners within our ski community to deliver their mandate within the HP system. After a first interactive review session held May 16-17 focusing on able-bodied programs, a second session was held on June 24-25, this time focusing on Para-Nordic programs. The sessions in the PN workshop addressed what appear as the main "gaps" in each of the 3 major development phases: Introduction and recruitment, Development and High Performance.
Fifteen participants from around the country, of whom 2 were also facilitators and 1 scribe, participated in the workshop. This included a select group of experts in Para-Nordic high performance development including athletes, coaches, CCC staff and regional representatives. The sessions were facilitated by Thomas Holland and Stéphane Barrette who challenged the participants to critically assess the areas of development that are the most affected by the issues and challenges within our current Para-Nordic HP system (including all stages of development, from Active Start to Training To Win), some planning imperatives and some initial long term goals to address the key gaps and challenges. Key mid-term (2014) development goals were drawn from the participant's gap analysis after assessing barriers and hurdles that need to be overcome. Three major goals were defined for each major phases of Para-Nordic HP system:
Intro/Recruitment 1. Improve awareness and enhance marketing initiatives
2. Increase human resources capacity and training/education
3. Increase grassroots' engagement
Development 1. Improve talent ID and recruitment 2. Increase racing opportunities and participation 3. Improve network of support and resources High Performance 1. Increase funding sustainability 2. Increase PN dedicated staff capacity 3. Increase international and domestic racing opportunities The next step in the review process is to review the notes from both workshops and start to prepare a draft strategic HP review document addressing able-bodied and Para-Nordic programs. |
Junior Athlete Profile:10 Things You Don't Know About Janelle Greer
My best finish in a cross-country skiing event was..... 34th in the Classic Sprint at World Juniors, Praz-de-Lys, France. My biggest inspiration in life is.... The feeling after you push yourself to the limit and knowing it was the best race you could have had. Growing up I have always wanted to be.... An Olympic skier, then a model, then a pilot, then a school teacher...My list went something like that. My favourite sport to play outside of cross-country skiing is.... Soccer!! My favourite movie is.... Batman the Dark Knight, the Snowman (my childhood movie) and the Hang Over.
Before a race I will listen to.... techno and ghetto gospel. If I could rule the world for a day I would.... Fix global warming and teach every developing country how to live healthy lives. (Inspired by my recent Socials teacher). If I could only have one more meal it would be.....Oh boy...a starter salad with goats cheese, tai chicken bites, some white cheddar macaroni, mashed potatoes with gravy, roast beef, corn on the cob and for desert I would like a big buffet of cakes and pies!! My favourite place in the world to visit is.... Skagway, Alaska, my grandma's house in Courtney, BC, Hawaii and Pennington Island (a little island where my family goes boat-camping).
My greatest Olympic moment is.... It's not really a good one because she crashed but I vividly remember cheering at the TV watching Perdita Felicien start the 100m hurdle race in Athens. But watching Bolt break the records was amazing, along with Chandra Crawford taking the gold.
