My best finish in a cross-country skiing event was.....First place at 2009 Ski Nationals in Duntroon, Ont.
My biggest inspiration in life is.... There aren't really any things or people in particular that inspire me. My friends and family though are people that influence my choices and actions every day, and I am thankful to have them with me.
Growing up I have always wanted to be.... it was always my greatest ambition to become an active biologist in the jungle or a veterinarian!!
My favourite team sport to play is.... Soccer
My favourite movie is.... The Beach
Before a race I will listen to.... Germany to Germany - Ratatat
If I could rule the world for a day I would.... This might sound like a typical Miss America answer but, I would take over all the oil fields in the planet and share the wealth and hopefully end world hunger.
If I could only have one more meal it would be..... Shish Taouk with lots of Greek potatoes and Arabic garlic sauce!!
My favourite place in the world to visit is.... Bangkok, Thailand
My greatest Olympic moment is.... Not all that original in terms of Olympic moments, but Michael Phelps winning his eighth gold medal in the men's 4×100 meter medley relay where he broke Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals won in a single Olympic Games.

HAYWOOD SECURITIES: Fuelling Canada's Cross-Country Skiers Quest for the Podium
Haywood-proc 2

Haywood Securities has been passionately involved with supporting high performance sport in Canada for nearly a decade.  Their investment in excellence has paid dividends even the most optimistic would not have dreamt possible.

Haywood's involvement with Cross Country Canada was initiated by a handful of individuals who were not only committed to personal fitness and sports themselves but also believed strongly in ensuring our team had all the tools necessary to reach the podium at the Olympic Games.

The golden relationship took shape in 2001 with a $40,000 donation to help the women's team at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City where Beckie Scott earned the first Olympic cross-country medal by a North American woman.  Since that time, Haywood's investment has grown to close to $2 million and includes title sponsorship of the NorAm Race Series (since 2004), World Cup sponsorships starting in 2005 and recently the Haywood Ski Nationals. Haywood was recognized for its contribution to our High Performance system at the 2006 Canadian Sport Awards where they received the Corporate Sponsor of the Year Award.  The firm has played a key role in Sara Renner, Chandra Crawford, Beckie Scott, Brian McKeever, Colette Bourgonje and Devon Kershaw winning international medals for Canada.

But the partnership between Haywood Securities and Canada's high-performance cross-country skiers is built on so much more than money and increased exposure.

It is a relationship that includes active involvement on the part of the firm - by individuals and clients who truly love this optimal winter sport.

Haywood is also very passionate about its involvement in fuelling these dreams of our next generation of cross-country skiers who will represent Canada beyond 2010.

In an effort to give more Canadian youth the opportunity to participate in cross-country skiing, the National Cross Country Ski Development Association was created by one of Haywood's Board members in 2007.  In its first two years, over $450,000 has been invested in 12 clubs, 20 full time coaches, 200 junior/senior racers and 1500+ skill development program skiers each year. With the principal remaining intact, this sport legacy is yet another example of the unique marriage between the Vancouver based company and CCC.

Inspiring youth to get involved in sport, while giving high-performance athletes the opportunity to achieve excellence, Haywood Securities has been a critical component to realizing the dream of international podiums. Their investment has paved the road to success for the current group heading to Vancouver and future generations of Canadian cross-country skiers.
Club Volunteer of the Month: Juneva Green, NWT (credit: Richard Daitch)
 Juneva Green (left) & Patti-Kay Hamilton-2
Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories is known for its boreal forest, which includes many species of evergreens that endure snow, wind, fire, rain and extreme cold.  A green of a different sort, Juneva Green, has been almost as resilient.

Juneva has been a Jackrabbit instructor for nearly thirty years.  At times, she has singlehandedly kept the program going and has taught hundreds of children to ski.
Her patience and nurturing has given young people the confidence that they can succeed in any field.  Nothing daunts Juneva.  If the weather is frigid, she'll find inventive indoor activities.

Her athletes know they can always rely on her.  Sarah Daitch recalls, "I would never have learned to ski and certainly not to compete without her tutelage.  Beyond coaching me, Mrs. Green has helped me learn to become a real racer.  She taught me to wax my skis and allowed me to wax in her porch.  When I was 17, I used a pair of old aluminum poles that she had loaned me to win the classic race at the World Junior Trials."

Juneva is an avid skier who leads her charges by example.  While she may not last quite as long as the 150 year old evergreens, which surround our beautiful trails, club members hope that she will continue to inspire youth for many more years.

Para-Nordic Profile: National Standard Field Tests for Para-Nordic Athletes
PN National Testing-Chin Up Equivalent-2

In 2005-2006, CCC tested the protocol for standard field tests for Para-Nordic Athletes.  CCC has been promoting the use of standard strength and critical speed tests for a number of years now, in an effort to encourage clubs around the country to adopt a common, athlete physiological assessment method. These field tests are easy to run as they do not require a sophisticated lab set up or specialized equipment.

We encourage coaches throughout the country to run these tests on a regular basis as a great way to specifically assess the progress of their athletes. The tests also provide objective feedback to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses and help coaches to adapt training focus accordingly.  By sending all tests results, disability and birth year of participants to HP Para-Nordic coordinators (jwhiting@cccski.com), you will also contribute to the building of a representative national database.
Cross-Country Skiing's Disco Dancing Queen Chandra Crawford Reveals Quirks and Qualities in Unique Vignette Campaign by Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium
Chandra Crawford-headshot with Kootenay Knitting Sweater
Chandra Crawford is known to Canadians as an elite cross-country skier and 2006 Olympic gold medallist.  But fans are learning that the native of Canmore, AB will be bringing plenty more to Vancouver 2010 than just her superb ski skills.

She may even bring her disco ball.

Crawford jumped onto the Canadian sporting scene at the age of 22, winning gold at the Turin 2006 Olympic Winter Games.  She has gained additional recognition and profile of late after starring in the lighthearted vignette campaign 'Get to Know Your Canadian Athletes', produced by Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.

Joining other prominent Canadian Olympians and Paralympians in the campaign, including freestyle skier Jenn Heil, figure skater Patrick Chan, long track speed skater Clara Hughes and a whole host of others, the vignettes reveal surprising - and fun-loving - details about the athletes' personalities and lifestyles.

What kind of music makes Crawford dance up a storm?
The Olympic champion reveals that she walks around with a "stereo purse" which has its very own disco ball.  Crawford considers herself a disco dancing queen and often dances down the street while listening to tunes on her iPod.

What's her idea of fun outdoors?

"Racing the down-hills in head-to-head heats...six girls jostling for position, it's just a fabulous good time outside.  That's what I get to do every weekend," says Crawford giddily.

What kind of statement does Crawford intend to make at the 2010 Winter Games?

Crawford believes that "Vancouver 2010 will be the time to be fast and female".

Canadians are getting to know Crawford through a series of different promotional pieces on TV, radio and online, as part of the Consortium's efforts to build athlete awareness leading up to Vancouver 2010.

Crawford recently joined Olympic Prime Time host Brian Williams in the feature 'Road to Vancouver', which appeared on CTV, TSN, Rogers Sportsnet and CTVOlympics.ca, highlighting her beloved hometown of Canmore, journey to Olympic gold at Turin 2006, and high hopes for Vancouver 2010.

Other Canadian cross-country skiers winning over fans nationwide in the Consortium's promotional efforts include Devon Kershaw, who stars in the 'Get to Know Your Canadian Athletes' vignette campaign.  Kershaw also happens to be a native of Canmore, and he and Crawford are dating.

Crawford and her cross-country teammates are expected to make plenty of noise at Vancouver 2010.  And millions of Canadians will be cheering her on in the months leading up to the 2010 Winter Games and all the way to the Olympic podium.
