Cross Country Canada Delivers World-Leading Coach and Support Team to Athletes
CCC Media Event
Canada's high-performance cross-country ski athletes will have a world-leading coaching and technical support team alongside their track to the Olympic and Paralympic podiums, thanks to financial support provided by Own the Podium 2010, Cross Country Canada officially announced in October.
Canada's cross-country skiers will be led by an enhanced coaching structure that brings more than 30 years of experience, while also having access to a full-time technical support group, and an intergrated support team - all critical resources essential to preparing for podium performances.
"Canada's cross-sountry skiers have been on a steady rise up the international rankings, and are now regularly knocking on the door of the international podium at all levels," said Al Maddox, executive director, Cross Country Canada, in a media release. "Through the generous support and leadership of Own the Podium, we can now deliver the world-leading resources our athletes need to gain a competitive advantage and better prepare to reach our goal of regularly climbing onto the podium with the leading nations in our sport."
Dave Wood, who has been the head coach of the National Ski Team for the last decade, will be advanced into the role of team leader. Wood will be responsible for leading the team into all major international competitions including World Championships and the Olympic Winter Games. While taking care of all organization, planning and logistics of the training and competition schedule, Wood will also supervise all technical support services and provide strategic advice in all aspects of program execution while collaborating with other National Ski Team coaches on daily program delivery.
Arild Monsen has been recruited from Molde, Norway to guide the Senior World Cup and Olympic Team. An accomplished athlete on the Norwegian National Team from 1982-1990, Monsen competed in three World Championships and was a wax technician for the Norwegians from 1993-97. An international technical delegate on the World Cup from 1997-2006, Monsen was chief of competition at the Norwegian National Championships and has coached Team Trondelag in Norway over the past two seasons. He has also enjoyed a number of successful World Cup results. Monsen will play a critical role in guiding Canada's Senior World Cup team while in charge of all details in the day-to-day high-performance program within the field of play.
Eric de Nys will continue holding the coaching reigns as Development Team Coach. During his four-year reign in the national program, he has coached many Canadian athletes to significant jumps in performance while competing at the Haywood NorAm's; Under-23 World Championships; and World Cup competitions.
"World-leading coaching, and a strong support team are core to ensuring Canada's cross-country ski athletes will be ready to play their part in helping the Canadian team achieve excellence, and own the podium in 2010," said Maddox during a media conference on the roof top of The Alberta Hotel Building in downtown Calgary, symbolizing Cross Country Canada's objective of the refined support team to lead them to the podium.
Canada's Para-Nordic Ski Team will also benefit from additional resources through a revamped support team. Kaspar Wirz, who has been the head coach since 1996, will also be promoted to the role of team leader. Wirz has led Canada's Para-Nordic Ski Team to multiple podium performances at the last three Paralympics and four World Ski Championships.
Robin McKeever, who has racked up seven Paralympic medals as a guide for his brother Brian, will take over the role as technique coach. McKeever is a nine-time able-bodied Canadian Champion and a member of the 1998 Olympic Team.
Celine Feagan will advance into her second year as biathlon specialist with the Para-Nordic squad. Feagan has more than 13 years of coaching experience, ranging from the club level to high-performance in Alberta and British Columbia. Feagan has worked with the Senior National Biathlon Team from 2004-2006 both as coach and physiotherapist where she travelled to several IBU World Cups and Europa Cups.
Equally as important as the coaches is the the increased capacity for technical support provided to both the National Ski Team and Para-Nordic Ski Team.
An extremely technical sport with multiple disciplines in variable conditions, Cross Country Canada will send seven technicians to support major events such as World Championships and Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, while up to four technicians will be on the World Cup tour, and one technical team member at each domestic event. Technicians will focus on constant ski testing and ski waxing.
Graham MacLean has been added as a full-time coordinator of technical services of the National Ski Team. While working with the entire technical support team, MacLean will be responsible for ski preparation at specified training camps and competitions, along with research development and technical readiness for 2010. Ian Daffern will continue his role as head wax technician for the Para-Nordic Team.
In addition to coaching and technical services, Canada's Nordic athletes will also have full access to a leading Integrated Support Team consisting of sport science, health and sports psychology who will ensure the athletes are race ready.

Sara Renner and Thomas Grandi Rally Mountain Community to Help Save Planet
Sara and Thomas
Olympic and World Cup medallists, Sara Renner and Thomas Grandi, led a group of more than 200 cyclists for the inaugural 350 ride.
The 20-kilometre recreational ride, which included a number of their fellow Olympians, took place on the Minnewanka loop in Banff, Alta., October 4, 2008.
Being Olympic winter athletes, Renner and Grandi have a strong connection with the environment, their impact and the effects of climate change. The Olympic couple were encouraging 350 other Canadians concerned about the environment to join them in the unique ride in support of climate change.
The number 350 is the most important number in the survival of the planet - 350 parts per million (ppm) of Carbon Dioxide is the safe line for the global climate. With the world mark currently at 387 ppm, Renner and Grandi are encouraging Canadians to continue to join them in inspiring political leaders to act and remember this critically important number.
For more information on 350, please visit www.350.org on the Internet.

How did you get involved in cross-country skiing?  I started off downhill skiing, but cross-country was always more interesting because there was a lot less sitting around.
How did you balance high school academics with athletics?  A lot of patience from my teachers and parents was helpful. I tried to be as efficient as I could with the time I did have to study.
School:  Banff Community High School (da Bears!)
School Average:  82%
What is a typical training day?  Driving to the Canmore Nordic Centre, roller ski technique session and video analysis, eating lunch at my bro's house, nap, running back to the Bill Warren Training Centre, strength training, then driving back to Banff.
When not skiing I am likely? Napping or making a latte.
When finished skiing I want to?  I will never stop skiing, but I hope to study in the field of Environmental Sciences at the University of Victoria or University of Calgary.

Biggest accomplishment in life or sport?  Being able to race two World Cup sprints at 16 years old.
If I could rule the world for a day I would? Appoint myself ruler of the world so that I could always rule the world, then have a latte.
What was it like to compete against athletes twice my age at the World Cup? Surreal, such a great experience. Just when I would catch my breath from racing, I would see someone like Kikkan Randall or Virpi Kuitunen and be like, 'Oh my, I just raced against them'.
Hardwood Hills Ski and Bike Opens the Door to the Future
Hardwood HillsFor years Jack Sasseville and Mike Badham were amongst hundreds of cross-country ski enthusiasts in southern Ontario who used every second of their spare time in the winter months to take advantage of the trails at Hardwood Hills Ski Club near Barrie, Ontario - be it for skiing themselves, coaching, or just simply enjoying the great outdoors.
But as much as the two shared a passion for the sport, they also feared they were going to lose their second home.
Just after Christmas last year, the news spread fast that Hardwood Hills, the cross country ski centre with the best-groomed, most extensive trail system in southern Ontario, was going out of business.
The employees had just received their pink slips. The owners, who had established Hardwood Hills as a ski centre in the early 1980s, said it was shutting down as soon as the snow melted in April.
It was sad news. It meant that hundreds of youngsters would have to find another place to learn to ski, and the 1,000 skiers who regularly turned up on Saturdays and Sundays would have to go elsewhere.
"It was pretty simple. If we didn't step in and take this place over it was going to die," said Sasseville, who has coached every level of skiing in Canada since 1976, and has been a colour analyst for the sport of cross-country skiing with CBC since 1998. "Mike (Badham) and I went out to find an investor group with a plan to save the place and grow it."
Sasseville and Badham quickly achieved their mission of finding an 11-member investor group to purchase the 35 acres of land which was previously owned by Kim and Dave Viney, and develop a plan to lease the remaining 278 acres from the Simcoe County and Oro-Medonte township.
They raised several hundred thousand dollars from investors and more money from skiers buying long-term memberships, with perks like a parking spot and a locker.
Then they had to make a deal on the land. They met Harry Hughes, mayor of the township of Oro-Medonte.
"It took a long time to get things moving, but we were finally able to close on the sale in February," said Sasseville. "The keys were handed over to us in May which was just in time to open the doors to a new mountain bike operation in the summer."
Originally just a cross-country ski venue, the newly coined Hardwood Ski and Bike opened with 88 kilometres of routing on 30 kilometres of actual trails, these are used for mountain biking and cross-country ski trails - all are named after Olympic sites beginning with 1994 Lillehammer, Norway up to Sochi, Russia in 2014 - ensuring year-round enjoyment by area residents.
Sasseville and his crew have not stood still since opening the doors on May 1. In addition to refurbishing the existing terrain, they have spent the summer months renovating the lodge which also complements two houses and a wax shed on the property that guests can already enjoy.
Just in time for the group's October 16 grand opening with more than 80 members in the local community who were instrumental in saving the facility, Hardwood welcomed three new groomers for their winter operation including a Piston Bully 400, a Yamaha Rhino and a Yellowstone Ginzugroomer.
"These new groomers will allow us to groom every kilometre of trail every day to the best of our ability," said Sasseville, who will share his time as the president and general manager of the club, with also helping to coach the high-performance program. "That is our commitment to our guests."
The benefits will extend beyond well-groomed trails. Hardwood Ski and Bike has also re-established its night-skiing program during the week on more than two kilometers of trails. Lights are being installed on many of the trails allowing them to open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The extended hours will be sure to benefit not only working professionals but also the strong programs already in place. Team Hardwood, which is led by full-time employee and coach Mike Doble, currently has more than 30 athletes involved in its program. The team has a strong feeder system with more than 200 Jackrabbits already taking their first steps in developing into the next generation of Canada's elite athletes.
With the Hardwood Ski and Bike team quickly ticking off items on its immediate list of To-Do's in order to return it back one of North America's top ski areas, it has ambitious plans for the future.
"Within the next 10 years we would like to build a new lodge, add accommodations and construct an event centre which we believe will help us bring back race opportunities," said Sasseville. "Our long-term plan is to build a ski tunnel and we have already been to Finland to investigate the ski tunnel operation they have in place."
The track to the future is shining bright on Hardwood Hills Ski and Bike, and most importantly, is being trusted to enthusiastic leaders.
