Nipika Mountain Resort Hosts National Ski Team
Nipika

Nipika Mountain Resort, tucked away across the Alberta border in the unique B.C. wilderness area adjacent to Kootenay National Park, is a new CCC sponsor, and host to training opportunities for the National Ski Team this summer.

Under the leadership of Lyle Wilson, a former National Ski Team coach, Nipika Resort was a pioneer in hosting summer Nordic ski training camps and glacier skiing throughout the 1980s prior to the establishment of the Haig glacier camp.

Almost 20 years later, Nipika has rekindled its connection with the National Ski Team this summer. Within just two hours drive of the Canmore Training Centre, it offers excellent proximity to all the required training opportunities for the Nordic athlete - a variety of roller skiing options, trail and mountain runs and endless mountain biking opportunities.

National Ski Team coach Eric de Nys has been elated in being able to add this retreat to the team's repertoire of training venues: "Nipika Mountain Resort has been an integral part of our training this summer. It offers the perfect off-the-grid training environment. We have completed some good hard work, not far from our back door in Canmore, while having some fun and being relaxed at the same time."

The team will have competed 13 days of dryland training by the end of the summer. The next National Ski Team training camp in September at Nipika will be shared with the Callaghan Valley Training Centre.

If you have not experienced Nipika and all it has to offer, put it on your wish list - you will not be disappointed!

With the fall season now upon us, the inclement weather is sure to follow. It is important for cross-country ski enthusiasts to be aware of this when heading out for your daily workouts.

Having a warm, dry change of clothes at the end of a workout can aid in the recovery process, and help keep sickness at bay. It is very important to accompany dry clothing with an appropriate fuel source to become a more effective athlete.

Seems like a small thing to do, but very few athletes remember to do it!

Porcupine Ski Runners Lead the Race to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Porcupine Ski Runners

Imagine for a moment hitting the start line of an Olympic or Paralympic cross-country ski race.

You look all around and you're surrounded by the top cross-country skiers in the world. Your goal is to put it all on the line and ski to the podium for your country. The crisp trails lay innocently ahead, ready to challenge the best in the sport while thousands of screaming Canadian fans, clad in red and white, line the flats and hills of the Callaghan Valley near Whistler, B.C.

The scene is frightening for even the cream of the crop in cross-country skiing, and while we can't all experience this dream feeling, Cross Country Canada has challenged Nordic clubs and enthusiasts across the country with an equally daunting task - to ski the distance around their club trails that equates to travelling from their hometown to the Olympic and Paralympic venue near Whistler, B.C.

Along with Canadian Pacific Railway, Cross Country Canada created the Sea-to-Sea-to-Sea program in an effort to spread the Olympic spirit across the country. With the program starting last year, teams young and old formed within a club will collectively log the kilometers skied on their club/regional trails over three seasons until 2010. Along the journey are lots of exciting awards and incentives to keep the kilometers rolling.

Taking on a challenge of this nature is nothing new to many of the members that now make up the Porcupine Ski Runners club in Schumacher, Ontario near Timmins - a club that was started in 1973 which now boasts a membership of more than 1,000 people.

To maximize health benefits of cross-country skiing, the Club has been encouraging its members to ski often and far with the creation of the 1,000 Kilometre Club since 1984. With nothing more than bragging rights, superb aerobic condition and a specially designed pin on the line, Club members do it simply for the enjoyment of the sport.

In its original season, nine skiers reached the benchmark and were named to the 1,000 Kilometre Club. The prestigious group has grown each year. In 1988, the club enjoyed a record season with 55 members reaching the magic number.

Since 1984, 184 people have recorded completing 1,000 kilometres in one ski season at the Club.  Last year, 27 skiers of all ages logged 1,000 kilometres.  But one man stands above all as the only person to do it each year since 1984 - Gerry McNair.

If anyone is set to accomplish the task of racking up the kilometres to Vancouver/Whistler, the members at Porcupine Ski Runners are sure to do it.

Since the Club's beginning in 1973, it is a Club built on a tradition of setting big goals in a tight timeframe.

What started out as a group of 30 interested individuals starting a non-profit organization under the leadership Dr. Raymond Tusluk, the group has not stood still.

By its 10th anniversary in 1983, the club had completed some ambitious plans which included moving its home to Schumacher, had hosted the Northern Ontario Ski Championships, had built an Olympic loop, three five-kilometre trails, a three-kilometre trail and a chalet.

Over the years, the membership acquired proper grooming equipment to properly maintain the wider trails and by its 20th anniversary, the membership count also passed the 1,000 mark for the first time. In 2004, another major addition was completed to allow for more skiing hours and distances.

With four-kilometres of lit trails added for night skiing, Nordic skiers in Northern Ontario now clearly have their trail lit to accomplish the goal of clocking the kilometres to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Alberta's Shauna Whyte Fourth in Women's Handicycling Road Race at Paralympic Games
Shauna Maria Whyte

Shauna Whyte, of Hinton, Alta., brilliantly negotiated the last turn to lead a group to the finish line for fourth place overall in the women's handcycling event on Saturday at the Paralympic Summer Games. Whyte, a three-time Winter Paralympian competing at her first Summer Games, was in a group of four riders that finished just a little over four minutes behind the medallists.

"It was a really good race and I worked really hard for that fourth place," said Whyte. "I don't think I was the strongest rider in that group but I had the best sprint at the end. There's a really wicked downhill at the end of the course and for us in the handcycling event we can't lean the bike over with the three wheels. It was fast and furious and I knew I had to put everything on the line going down that hill"

Whyte plans to continue competing in cycling in the summer and biathlon and cross-country skiing in the winter.   Her next major goal is the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver- Whistler. "I hadn't competed in quite some time before this week and the performance today was a big confidence boost for me,'' she said.  "I consider this a new beginning and I wanted to show than I'm back now.  I'm not only looking at Vancouver but beyond that as well.  I'm excited about the possibilities in both cycling and skiing.''

Congratulations Shauna on behalf of everyone at Cross Country Canada.

Family : Two Sisters
Age : 19
Current Team: CNEPH
Club Affiliated: Skibec
Best Result: 25th Place at 2008 Junior World Championships in Italy
Career Goals: Win a medal at the Junior World Championships and ski in World Cup events in places where skiing is as popular as hockey is in Canada.
How did you get involved in cross-country skiing? Inspired by my parents
How did you balance high school academics with athletics? It is not easy, but you have to find a way to manage. You need to be disciplined, and that was the biggest challenge for me.
School: Cégep François-Xavier-Garneau
School Average: 75 per cent
What is a typical training day? I get up as late as possible, which means grabbing a very quick breakfast, and usually rush to get to training session. I will either ski or run first, work out with weights, and then i go home and have a rest. Late afternoons and evenings my parents keep me busy doing chores around the house.
When not skiing I am likely? Mostly duck or goose hunting, snowboarding, or just relaxing. I also enjoy reading.
When finished sking I want to? Work in a field that I am really interested in and where I can totally throw myself into my work.
Favourite Vacation Spot? I love being around the ocean or a lake. I have to be by the water and find some peace and quiet in order to truly get away from the rat race in the city.
Movie or Read a Book? I like to balance both - depending on what movie it is.
Favourite Book? The Pianist by Wladyslaw Szpilman
Favourite Movie? The Lord of the Rings
Favourite Actor/Actress? Robin Williams
Favourite Competition Venue: Europe because it is warmer over there and the ambiance is completely different. Skiing is really popular over there and the caliber of competitors is really high so it always forces me to put everything on my line.
Favourite Olympic/Paralympic Moment? Kenensia Bekele winning the 5,000 metre, which was absolutely amazing.
Inspiration? There isn't really any one person who inspires me or whom I aspire to become. The people closest to me are the ones who inspire me the most, and that's the way it should be.
Favourite Colour? Green
Cats or Dogs? Dogs
If I had to do maintenance on my car what could I do? Before I do anything, I'd have to buy a car!
Before a race, I will listen to what song? I don't really listen to music just before a race.
Favourite Muscian? I listen to almost all styles of music, from reggae to hardcore to French and francophone music.
Biggest accomplishment in life or sport? I hope that is still yet to come!

For all of you racers please take note that your CCC Racing license is now available on line at CCC's website as well as information on renewing or buying your FIS license for this season. Ski season is just around the corner!!
