FIRE GRANTS REAUTHORIZATION ACT INTRODUCED IN THE HOUSE
| | On Wednesday, June 22nd, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30) introduced H.R. 2269, the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act. The bill authorizes the Assistance to Firefighters (FIRE) Grant Program and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program through Fiscal Year 2016. The legislation has been co-sponsored by 14 members of the House of Representatives, including the House leadership of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. The bill is very similar to legislation passed by the House of Representatives during the 111th Congress. Unfortunately the Senate did not act on that bill before the Congress adjourned at the end of 2010; therefore both the Senate and House will need to take up the legislation during the 112th Congress. On Thursday, March 10th, Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT) introduced similar reauthorization legislation, S. 550. The Senate bill was approved by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on March 18th. The bill will now be considered by the full Senate.

NVFC Works to STOP Firefighter Vehicle Accident Deaths
| | Heart disease remains the leading cause of on-duty firefighter deaths, and yet the second leading cause of fatalities each year is equally, and probably more easily, preventable: vehicle crashes. Each year, dozens of first responders are killed and hundreds more are injured while responding to or returning from an incident. Recognizing that more needs to be done to educate first responders about vehicle safety, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has partnered with McNeil & Company and its ESIP Program to create a new campaign designed to increase safe vehicle operations among first responders and provide training to STOP preventable injury and death from vehicle accidents.
