Enhancing Community Preparedness

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate launched a public challenge last week, inviting members of the public to develop and submit ideas for ways individuals and businesses can help contribute to their own community preparedness before disaster strikes. The challenge, available at www.challenge.gov/fema, is open to anyone who wants to help build the nation's emergency management team.

Providing emergency responders and relief organizations with information and resources to help protect the entire community from threats of all kinds is an important part of community preparedness. To that end, FEMA announced new guidelines on emergency sheltering last week to help emergency responders protect children and people with access and functional needs in the aftermath of a disaster.

Learn more about emergency preparedness, including tips and resources for preparing your family at www.Ready.gov.

Last week, Administrator Fugate also released a statement lamenting the passing of long-time preparedness advocate and blogger John Solomon. John was dedicated to the mission of public preparedness and a firm believer in the power of a prepared and resilient public.
