Recovery Act Funding Strengthens Communities

As part of ongoing efforts to provide support for frontline first responders who work every day to ensure the safety and security of communities across the nation, Secretary Napolitano visited Glen Burnie, Md., on October 15 to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for Anne Arundel County's new Marley Fire Station.

The new Marley Fire Station was funded by a $1.86 million DHS American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Fire Station Construction Grant. The new station will accommodate a 32-member staff, feature three drive-through bays that will expedite response times, and provide new sleeping-quarters for personnel that meet health and safety standards.

Secretary Napolitano later joined Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in Baltimore to meet with members of the city's Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, a group of highly-trained first responders who provide specialized, coordinated and comprehensive response and recovery capabilities for search and rescue operations within the region. Since 2004, DHS has allocated nearly $10 million under UASI to train, exercise and equip these first responders in the Baltimore area.

Since President Obama signed ARRA into law on Feb. 17, 2009, DHS has awarded approximately $2.6 billion in ARRA funding to create jobs and enhance the nation's security. DHS received $210 million in ARRA funding for the Fire Station Construction Grant Program to replace or modify 120 fire stations to enhance response capabilities, protect communities from fire-related hazards and meet National Fire Protection Association standards.

Stop. Think. Connect. Update!

On behalf of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), I am delighted to introduce you to the Stop. Think. Connect. Update! This newsletter will provide you with Stop. Think. Connect. Campaign news and will feature Campaign programs and activities each month. We've launched a new Campaign web page, www.dhs.gov/stopthinkconnect, which offer links to free, customizable tools and resources you can use to help us educate the American public on what they can do to be safer and more secure online.

On October 4, 2010, Howard Schmidt, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator and Special Advisor to the President, and DHS Deputy Secretary Jane Holl Lute officially launched Stop. Think. Connect. at the Seattle Public Library, along with the kick off of National Cybersecurity Month. Read Mr. Schmidt's post on the White House Blog.

To learn how you can get involved with Stop. Think. Connect., visit the Campaign Events & Activities section of the web page. Included here you find more information about: cyber forums we'll be hosting in collaboration with the National Centers of Academic Excellence to bring together diverse groups of community, private and government participants for dialogues on cybersecurity issues; opportunities to lead or host campaign activities through our Friends of the Campaign program; and how to join the Campaign coalition of public and private sector organizations.

Cybersecurity begins with each of us. We must each take the basic steps to ensure the security of our computers and online lives. By protecting ourselves, we make the Internet a safer place for everyone. Stop. Think. Connect. -- and stay safer online.
