Department Profile: Shallotte (NC) Fire Department

Ten years ago the Shallotte Fire Department was a failing institution. The volunteer department received a poor rating from the Insurance Services Organization causing an increase in insurance for properties in town and distrust among residents and property owners.

The town quickly pulled together in an effort to revamp the fire department. Several full-time firefighters were hired to strengthen the department's roster and the fire chief also worked double duty as the fire marshal. Additionally, a regional fire training center was developed to provide local training opportunities. As the fire department continued to improve, funding was secured for a new state-of -the-art facility that opened in March 2010.

Organize Activities to Help the Gulf Coast Clean-up Effort

The Gulf Coast oil spill is an environmental disaster that will negatively impact the region for decades. Fire Corps teams across the nation can assist in the clean-up effort by collecting a resource most everyone possesses - hair.

Hair naturally attracts oil and is ideal for filtering the pollutant out of water. Hair clippings are stuffed inside of nylons to create what are called hair booms. Salons and pet groomers across the country have taken action by collecting clippings and sending them to organizations such as Matter of Trust; an organization that produces the hair booms and sends them to the Gulf Coast.

Recovery Measured by Responder Health

These responders were largely unprepared for the hazards of the job.

In an article on the Washington Examiner website, James Carafano writes about how a lack of preparedness shows in the health and safety of responders. At Ground Zero, "many lacked basic personal protective equipment such as work boots, masks and gloves," he writes. "The first ones in had no safety briefings, much less formal training."
