H1N1 Vaccine Now Available for DHS Employees

Secretary Napolitano and Assistant Secretary and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alex Garza are encouraging all DHS employees to get their seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccines as soon as possible.

Although reports of flu-related hospitalizations and deaths have been declining, there is no way to predict accurately the impact that a third wave may have. Vaccine supplies to protect against H1N1 are increasing, and many states have opened up vaccination to anyone who wants it.

This vaccine is the best way to protect against the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus. DHS employees may contact their local Federal Occupational Health office or visit www.foh.dhhs.gov for further information. Employees can also visit www.flu.gov to find where and when they and their families can get vaccinated in their state.

DHS officials also remind employees that, in addition to getting vaccinated, they should practice good flu prevention measures, including washing their hands, coughing and sneezing into their sleeves, and staying home if they feel sick.

Federal and State Partners Test Emergency Alert System

FEMA, the Federal Communications Commission, the state of Alaska, and the Alaska Broadcasters' Association on Wednesday conducted a statewide exercise of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) in Alaska. The EAS is a national public warning system that allows the president to address the nation during a national emergency.

Radio and television broadcast stations and cable television systems across Alaska participated in the exercise, which tested the capabilities of the EAS system. With the help of the Alaska Broadcasters Association, public service announcements informing the public about the test were distributed to television and radio stations on Dec. 21.

"Periodically exercising our communications capabilities is an important step to ensure that we, as a country, are prepared for an emergency," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. "This is only a test, but it also serves as an important reminder that just as our federal, tribal, state, and local teams are taking steps to be prepared, so should families across our country."

State and local authorities have used the EAS to deliver important emergency information such as AMBER (child abduction) alerts and severe weather information. The alert and warning system includes U.S. broadcasters, cable television systems, wireless cable systems, satellite digital audio radio service providers, direct broadcast satellite service providers, and others.
