Sustainability and Efficiency Task Force Holds Inaugural Meeting

DHS Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC) Sustainability and Efficiency Task Force held its first meeting last week in Washington, D.C. The task force, created in June, is comprised of an experienced group of energy and environmental experts who will advise Secretary Napolitano on ways to bolster national security by maximizing resource efficiency.

"This task force will accelerate our efforts to pursue renewable resources and increase efficiency throughout the Department," said Secretary Napolitano. "Expanding our sustainability efforts will allow us to more effectively deploy our resources to fulfill our critical security mission."

The new task force complements the Department-wide Efficiency Review the secretary launched in March and will emphasize streamlining operations, eliminating waste, and improving customer service.

The task force - comprised of experts from academia, business, government and architecture - will look for ways to incorporate sustainable practices into DHS operations in order to enhance national security and generate cost savings.

DHS Co-Hosts Chemical Sector Security Summit

The department's Office of Infrastructure Protection (IP) and the Chemical Sector Coordinating Council recently co-hosted the third annual Chemical Sector Security Summit in Baltimore, Md. The three-day event, which was held from June 29 through July 1, attracted more than 350 chemical stakeholder partners, including industry owner/operators, federal, state, and local officials, Congressional staff, and representatives from the international community.

Plenary sessions and breakout workshops included presentations and discussions on Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards; threats to the Homeland and Chemical Sector; state and local issues; voluntary best practices; and cybersecurity, among other topics. DHS representatives demonstrated several IP programs, including the Voluntary Chemical Assessment Tool, TRIPwire, and the Site Security Plan tool.

The annual event provided an open forum for DHS officials and the private sector to work together to share information based on the National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) Partnership Framework.
