Cannonballs Catch Spadefish
READY.... AIM.... FIRE! Well, the cannonballs I'm talking about don't require gunpowder. This variety can be found floating lazily in the current around jetties and nearshore. As I found out on a recent fishing adventure with Capt. Dan Utley, aka "The Fishin' Coach" off the coast of Hilton Head Island, spadefish are particularly fond of cannonball jellyfish. In fact, it's like ringing the dinner bell.
Spadefish look live overgrown aquarium fish with their dark stripes and silver body. At first glance, they might look like a sheepshead or a striped triggerfish. And many an angler has experienced the large schools of these that take residence under your anchored boat, and have tried in vain to catch them. But don't be fooled, when you hook in to one of these dudes, you've got your hands full. Capt. Dan shared the secret bait and fishing technique these tenacious fighters simply cannot resist. And it starts with netting a few cannonballs.
As Capt. Dan says, catching a spadefish is like catching a five-pound bream on light tackle. They fight like permit and they're great on the table. One of these slabs will feed an entire family.
So get ready to learn how to turn on the spadefish bite with some very simple tackle and you'll soon be catching some Good 'Ol Big 'Un's just like the pro's do. Have your breakfast with the Nuts & Bolts crew this Sunday morning on Fox Sports Net-South. We'll light the 'fuse' at 7:15am in the Southern Outdoors block on FSN.

MORE FUN WITH KNOTS
Ask ten people what knot they use to tie on their hook or lure and you'll probably get ten different answers. For me, I like a knot that has a high knot strength, and is easy to tie, even when it's dark or the boat is pitching and tossing. The knot that fits that bill is the Uni-Knot. It's extremely versatile in that it can be used to connect hook, swivel, lure or sinker. And, you can use this same knot to connect leader to the main line... just tie two Uni-Knots and let them lock against each other. Although this knot works well with braided line, I use it more often with mono and fluorocarbon.

COOL WEATHER CATCHES IN THE LOW COUNTRY
The South Carolina coastal area is famous for monster speckled trout, doormat-sized flounder and big redfish in the late fall of the year. From the creeks around Little River all the way south to Hilton Head Island, you can tangle with the big boys and earn your inshore slam if you use the right baits and fish the tides. This time of year, the gamefish are honing in on bait fish as well as the shrimp that have been showing up in numbers. Shrimp are a good bet, fished under a rattling cork, but... there's a lot of other critters out there that will wear your shrimp out, like crabs, pinfish, toadfish, and other things that aren't exactly on the A-List for us anglers. Many of us choose to fish artificials because it's inherently cheaper, and you don't have to deal with as many of the 'undesirables'. The folks at Haddrell's Point Tackle Supply are a wealth of contemporary fishing information in the Charleston area, and provided the background for this Fishing Forecast from the South Carolina Low Country and some insight on lures to use that will catch the big 'un's.

Newest Member Of N&B Pro Staff
Once in a while someone comes along who exemplifies the qualities to which we would all like to aspire. A true passion for fishing. The willingness to actively participate in conservation measures that help to preserve our natural resources and maintain a balance in the marine environment. And through their activities, they encourage others to become involved in the sport of fishing.
One might think that someone like this would be a full-time charter guide, and many of our Pro-Staffers are. Or perhaps a seasoned Weekend Warrior. Or even a tournament angler. Again, you'd be right again.
But this newest inductee into the fold is none of those. In fact this individual is just 7 years old; but he has fishing in his blood, and a zeal for spending time on the water.
We first learned about Louie Echols in stories his grandfather, Dan, would write on the Nuts & Bolts Forum. It soon became evident this young man was much more than just a kid who likes to fish. And, if you read any of Dan's stories, it's obvious Louie has an excellent mentor. The words "Patience" and "7 years old" are not usually placed in the same sentence, but when reading of the adventures, and mis-adventures, of this duo it is clear this young man is well on his way to being a heck of a fisherman.
So we put our heads together, with input from one of our other Nuts & Bolts Pro Staffers, Ron Barwick, and decided to create a Nuts & Bolts Junior Pro Staff. And Louie is the charter member of this soon-to-be elite group of youngsters. To celebrate this occasion we put together a nice little Welcome Package and surprised Louie with it.
Ron crafted a unique, custom spinning rod complete with a Shimano spinning reel, and supplied a huge assortment of line, hooks and lures...everything a true Pro Staffer should have. Also in the package was Louie's very own Nuts & Bolts Pro Staff fishing shirt (and one for grandad Dan too), and a certificate acknowledging Louie as a Junior Pro Staff member.
A lot of us can recall the first fish we ever caught, and the parent or grandparent who took us fishing that first time. If we were lucky, we got to go again, and again and again. Eventually, fishing and the outdoors became a part of our lives. We were taught to respect the great outdoors and do things to improve and preserve our natural resources.
Louie is very lucky to have someone who takes him fishing. And I know many of us benefited from similar experiences. When we can generate excitement and passion for fishing in the youth of today, it' a wonderful thing. My dad and grandad did it for me, and I've tried to pass the torch on to my kids and all the other kids I've ever taken fishing. Look at the smile on this youngster's face and it's quite clear Louie is the perfect choice for a Pro Staffer. When you're fishing, everything is right with the world, even if you're not 'catching'. Dan has got Louie on the right track, and I'm sure this young man will remain hooked for life.
Congratulations Louie! Welcome to the Nuts & Bolts Pro Staff team.
