Spend an hour at a public boat launch ramp on a busy weekend afternoon and you will see everything from near-misses to near-fist fights. It is amazing how many boat owners simply don't have a good grasp on boat handling, rules of the road, aids to navigation, required safety gear, and it goes on and on.
It's probably safe to say that most boating mishaps are directly attributable to operator error or lack of knowledge. It's also surprising that so many states require no formal training or certification to operate a power boat. Remember, boat registrations are nothing more than taxes.
Fortunately, there is the U.S. Power Squadron and they do a great job in promoting boating safety as well as providing boater education courses for recreational boaters. The USPS offers comprehensive classroom courses that cover the fundamentals of seamanship, boat handling, boat types, rules of the road, navigation aids, regulations, adverse conditions, marine VHF radio, knots, trailering and introductory piloting.
I took this course years before I got my master captain's license and the knowledge I gained really enriched my boating experience, and it gave me a head start on the Coast Guard courses.
Beyond becoming a better, safer boater...many insurance companies will offer a discount on your boat policy if you successfully complete the USPS course. Again, I've benefited from that for years too.
This is a great course for everyone in the family to take. It's always a good idea to have someone, other than yourself, who is able and comfortable with handling your boat. The course I took had a Red Cross First Aid course scheduled right after the boat classes finished. We took that too.
So check out the U.S. Power Squadron's Website and locate a course offered near you. Whether you've been behind the helm for years, or just buying your first boat, this course has something that can benefit everyone...including us other boaters who share the waterways with you.
And remember, before you leave the docks...
Check the weather,
Check your safety gear,
Check the weather,
Conduct a Pre-Launch Check, and
File a Float Plan
Be safe out there.

One of the most effective tools in your tackle arsenal is an umbrella. Not the kind you use in the rain, though. The umbrella rig, when trolled, mimics a school of baitfish and it is deadly on stripers, bass and most saltwater fish that follow the kitchen around.
This Sunday morning, have your breakfast with Capt. Cefus McRae and Capt. Mack Farr, and learn how to rig, deploy and troll these underwater mobiles to increase your hook-up percentage.
Cefus and Mack explore Lake Sidney Lanier in north Georgia on an unusually cold and windy summer day. Live bait fishing or casting plugs was not an option in these conditions. On this show we turn lemons into lemonade with the use of the umbrella rig...including multiple hook-up's on the same rig at the same time.
Even when the sun is shining, be sure to carry an umbrella along, and you might just find It's Raining Stripers! Watch Nuts & Bolts this Sunday morning at 7:15EDT on Fox Sports Net-South in the Southern Outdoors program block and again next Thursday at noon. |

AUGUST IN THE LOW COUNTRY
Yes, it's hot. And one would expect the fishing to be lackluster. Not so in the South Carolina Low Country. The fish are still there, you just have to use the right tactics, rigs and baits.
Here's the August Fishing Forecast for the Charleston area, but these tactics will work just about anywhere along the coastline from Savannah to Little River. Give them a try and get out there while the fishing is hot !
