Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

I first met Fred Tutman several years ago when my colleague, Jan Kearce, and I invited a group of environmental movers-and-shakers to join us on the Chesapeake Bay for a conversation about the leadership needed to create a sustainable ecological future for the region.  Fred arrived late, but his entrance immediately infused the room with energy and the tension created when someone dares to ask direct questions.  "Are we preaching to the choir?" he wanted to know.  "We cannot talk about the environment without talking about the people and communities who depend upon the local natural resources."

Fred's participation challenged us to go much deeper and more courageously into the conversation, to look not only at solutions that solve environmental problems, but also to explore the relationship between people and the earth and our natural resources. Jan and I continued that conversation with Fred on the shores of the Patuxent River months later on. His perspective has influenced my understanding of how we will envision and create a more harmonious and sustainable future.

Fred will get YOU thinking, too, as he helps us to see what he can see from his unique post as the Patuxent Riverkeeper.  Please join me on Monday for some inspiration -- and an energizing, inclusive perspective!

Very best,

Listen on Monday.

Riverkeeper Fred Tutman speaks for the water. Often, his canoe is his office as he patrols Maryland's Patuxent River. Tutman has served as the Patuxent Riverkeeper since leaving law school in 2004. A tireless advocate for the river, he grew up along its banks as did seven generations of his family before him.  Since then, Tutman has dedicated his life to protecting the 110-mile river, winning awards and accolades for his efforts to protect and restore clean water in the Patuxent and its connected ecosystem.  In his vigilance on behalf of the Patuxent, Fred has come to see the relationship between people and our waterways as a shared opportunity for stewardship and community even as he has become the leader of a growing watershed movement. Host Kate Ebner and Fred Tutman invite you to join them in exploring Fred's vision of clean water and healthy communities.

Nebo 2015: A Vision in Progress

In July of this year, the Nebo team met for a visioning retreat to go through a process we so often provide for both our coaching and corporate clients- visioning. Visioning is a powerful process that helps people to see and describe the desired future. After the vision process is complete, Nebo helps people devise a strategic plan to make that vision real.

In order to envision the future, you first must tell the story of the past and present. At our company retreat in July, each Nebo staff member shared her personal story that brought them to work for Nebo, and we all shared in the telling of the history and present day story of the company. Finally, we were ready to reflect and create our visions for Nebo's future in the date we selected --  2015.

Our visions were both verbal and visual, far-reaching yet also specific. We laid out where we want to be as a company in 2.5 years, felt incredibly energized and inspired and then....went back to our desks, in-boxes and to-do lists, tucking our visions away in a desk drawer. Because we had learned from Lucia Capacchione that one of the most important parts of visioning is having a visual reminder to inspire you daily to work towards your vision, we invited a graphic facilitator to visit our office and turn our visions into visuals.

Trent, our graphic facilitator, sketched the most important concepts from our vision of Nebo 2015. We experimented with creating visual representations of some of our biggest concepts and talked about what symbols best fit our vision of Nebo in 2.5 years. In a few weeks, we'll have a design that represents our vision of Nebo 2015 without using words at all, which will be refreshing as each of us sees upwards of hundred of thousands of words in a single day. Then we'll surround ourselves with our vision- on posters, mugs, t-shirts, notepads, mouse pads- because the more often we feel inspired, the sooner the vision will be real.
