Tips from the Master Gremlin-Tamer and Author Rick Carson
In the August 27th episode of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life, Host Kate Ebner and Author Rick Carson delved into the important topic of how to get out of your own way. Carson, whose book, Taming Your Gremlin, has been a steady seller for more than three decades, has studied why and how our tough inner critical voice, which he called The Gremlin, sabotages our success at making changes that are important to us. Kate notes that, when it comes to making your vision real, understanding your Gremlin and what to do with that critical voice is essential.
Rick Carson shared many insights on air. Here are just a few:
- Your Gremlin is an opinion of yourself to which you have developed loyalty. It is that narrator in your head who's accompanied you since you came in this world and who is out to stop you from being happy and having what you truly want.
- Your Gremlin is not your friend. Your Gremlin is not cute.
- The Gremlin-taming method is not about replacing negative messages with positive ones. It's about gaining objectivity. As Rick put it, "Learning to get a sliver of light between what you really are on the inside and all of your ideas about who you are (positive and negative) is a worthy goal. This is called objectivity -- also, creative indifference. The ability to observe yourself objectively is the basis for taming your Gremlin."
- By paying attention to how your Gremlin interferes with your life, you will naturally begin to rein in some of these destabilizing thoughts and behaviors.
- Begin by noticing your thoughts. Rather than fight them, acknowledge where you are right now. Explore your fears and self-doubts rather than try to banish them. Accentuate them and play them up to put them in the light and make them visible rather than lurking in the shadows.
