Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

People cite money worries as the number one reason for not taking the bold steps that lead to the realization of their dreams.  In fact, most people feel held in place by the real need to make a predictable living and by the belief that leaving a secure job is the risk-equivalent of jumping off a high cliff into the wild unknown.

In our entrepreneurial society starting one's own business is often an important feature of a life dream. The tough economy of the past few years has generated a wave of start-up companies.  So, how can you prepare yourselves for financial and business success even as you take the bold actions called for by starting and building a business?

On Monday, July 30 on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life radio show, well-known Certified Financial Planner Louis Barajas will provide a road map for visionaries like you who want to live your vision and thrive financially and personally while doing it.  I hope you'll join me and this acclaimed financial adviser for a practical hour that will inspire you and equip you for success.

Very best,

How You Can Become an Inspiring and Visionary Leader
Tips from the July 23 Show with Kate Ebner

  • Great leaders are honest, forward-thinking, competent and inspiring (The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes & Posner)
  • Aim to lead in all areas of your life: work, family and community
  • Everything we have or use today is an inheritance of the visions of others. How will you shape the future?
  • Visionary leadership is courageous and often ahead of its time-  If you see something that others can't yet, hold your ground while those around you catch up.
  • Center yourself in the present moment before addressing the future. Ask yourself, "What's true now?"
  •  In your vision, address for the sake of WHAT are we working, WHERE are we going, WHEN will we get there and HOW?
  • Use as much detail as possible to make your vision seem real to you and not like a distant dream.
  •  Share your vision with someone you trust and, if you've created a visual representation, keep it somewhere you will see often to remind yourself of where you want to go.
Listen to past shows to for more inspiration. Kate learned to:
  • "Think outside the box and find resources that are available right now" from Dr. Sasha Kramer
  • "Find the on thing that switches you on. See where you're lucky instead of unlucky" from Ken Banks
  • "Take small actions, find your fellow travelers and practice reflection" from Deborah Frieze
  • "Find a 'swiss cheese vision' that everyone can take part in" from Chris McGoff
  • "Trust in the wisdom of your younger self" from Ellyn Spragins
Listen to these great tips and more on the podcast of 7/23's episode or on our website.
My Story in Five Faces Exercise

This exercise will help you with one of the most important parts of visioning: telling your story up to the present time.

Find five photographs of yourself from different years of your life that help to tell your "story in five faces." Then write a short piece (100-200 words) about each photograph.

Your paragraphs should answer the following questions:

1.    Who were you at this time in your life?
a.    What were your life circumstances?
b.    What were your main concerns at the time?
c.    How did you feel about yourself?
2.    What emotions do you recall from that time?
3.    What perspective did you draw from that time in your life?

For a great example of five faces and paragraphs that illustrate one woman's life trajectory, read Connie Schultz's piece in Parade Magazine.

Rethinking Accountability

"Shift your conception of accountability from negative to positive- we are accountable for our successes just as much as for the things at which we need to work harder."
