Dear Reader,

Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life
radio show often brings visionary leaders who share what they know and see.  We learn from their experiences and perspectives.  However, sometimes I like to feature distinguished thinkers who can teach you the basics of how to be visionary.  The premise of our radio show is that every one of us has the potential to be visionary and to live an extraordinary life.

So how do you actually make a vision?  Visioning is a creative process.  When you envision, you are putting your imagination in service to the future you desire.  This is "right brain" thinking.

On Monday, July 9th, Dr. Lucia Capaccione, author of a definitive book on the visioning process, will join me to share her tried-and-true process for creating and manifesting your vision.  I have used Lucia's approach for many years and often incorporate it into vision retreats and programs.  I can't wait to hear her perspective about why her process works, what makes a vision compelling and powerful -- and how to make your vision real once you've created it.

I hope you'll join us!

Very best,

Dear Me: Writing a Letter to Your Younger Self

"You don't have to be the miserable one in the family --  no one does."

"You're not responsible for keeping everyone at work happy all the time."

"You are a recovering yes-aholic."

***   ***   ***   ***

These are just a few of the life lessons that Author Ellyn Spragins shared from various letters, including her own, on the July 2 episode of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life. After  co-writing and editing a New York Times best-selling collection of letters by prominent women to their "younger selves," Ellyn Spragins sat down to reflect upon a difficult time in her life and write her own letter.  Using the process that she had developed,  Ellyn discovered firsthand the many benefits of writing a letter to one's past self, including the powerful insight, compassion and catharsis that it yields for the letter writer.   "Putting words down on paper crystallizes your ideas better than just mulling it over," she explained. "The writing process takes reflections and turns them into insight."

Writing to one's self also allows for a degree of honesty hard to find in other contexts.  Ellyn elaborated, "When you sit down to write to yourself, you really strip away any veneer you might want to put on your past because it's just you talking to you. There are really two stories of your life- one that's public, full of accolades and jobs and one personal story.  The personal story, the one with all the bumps and bruises, is the one we want women to access when writing their letters."

One of the most powerful effects of writing these letters is the compassion women find for their younger selves.  The letter-writing process allows women to reconnect with a younger version of themselves at a difficult time in the past.  The process helps you to let go of any disappointment, anger or regret that you may be carrying with you and reclaim and incorporate that "previous you" into the wisdom of your present self.

On the roots of her successful book series:

" When I was 32, I lost my mother. Thinking about her life made me realize that we had experienced similar life challenges and it shifted my mindset from just thinking about myself to thinking about other women's stories. I wanted to hear about the courage that got them through difficult moments and that's how the book began. When I got the idea, I really just thought of it as a book I'd like to read myself."
