Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

When you were little, did you know what you wanted to do when you grew up?

Most of us don't. I recall seriously considering careers in law, public relations, becoming a chef, teaching English, raising dogs, and becoming a social worker at various points along the way.

Lately, I've become curious about how people find their paths, especially to unusual careers that blend several passions or interests. Next Monday, June 18th, Mary Morton, who holds the prestigious position of Curator of French Paintings at the National Gallery of Art will explore this topic with me on air. We'll look at how she discovered museums and the choices that led into curating art exhibits and straight to the top of her profession.

Please join me as I walk Mary's path with her on air -- and also learn how to see through the eyes of an accomplished curator.

Best wishes,

Chris McGoff: On Leading vs. Managing

On Monday, June 4, Kate Ebner interviewed Chris McGoff, expert on change leadership, founder of The Clearing, Inc. and author of THE PRIMES, a book of simple, but powerful concepts that open up new possibilities for groups and teams. Chris posited that there is no real useful distinction between the nouns 'leader' and 'manager.' "THE PRIMES discounts the nouns," stated Chris, "and emphasizes the verb 'leading' over the verb 'managing.'" As he explained to Kate on the June 4 show, "Anyone at anytime in a system, regardless of title, can take on leading. We believe that every person on earth is capable of and is called to the act of leading at one time or another."

Chris and his colleagues researched what "leading" really means by exploring key questions, such as: "What is it about these people who are driving transformation and change? What  are they actually doing?" Through their research, they identified these distinctive components of leading:
  1. Setting direction
  2. Allocating resources
  3. Inspiring action
  4. Hold themselves accountable for results
Chris also shared, "We also believe that many people in leadership roles are not leading...People in leadership positions are often much more comfortable working in the system, rather than working on the system. Working on the system as a leader requires setting new directions, defining a vision and allocating resources. Managers work within the system -- and make it hum. Leaders, however, change the frame of the entire system by working on it."

Are you challenged by these distinctions between 'leading' and 'managing?'  Would you like to learn more about THE PRIMES?

Listen to the complete interview with Chris McGoff and find out the two most-used Primes and how you can use them to help your group solve any problem.

On vision...

"The worst leaders in the world bring no vision. The ones who are almost as bad bring too much vision. The masters of this game bring a piece of Swiss cheese - it is kind of delicious in what it says and it has gaping holes in it."

 THE PRIMES    THE PRIMES

by: Chris McGoff
This book is a collection of "eureka" moments experienced by teams driving major change initiatives. Chris McGoff and his colleagues recognized THE PRIMES as universally present wherever people get together in groups. The "ah-ha's!" in this book began as sketches on scraps of paper or the backs of cocktail napkins, usually discovered at times of desperation to help the change agents climb out of a conceptual hole and drive transformation forward. Distilled down to their essence, in readable and entertaining form, The PRIMES is a field manual for anyone ready to step up to serious challenges, predict and manage inevitable problems, create a brighter future, and produce extraordinary results.
