Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

(Our apoligies for the duplicate message.  In our earlier message, our next radio show guest was referred to in the message as Dr. Hayat Singh.  Please note that we are looking forward to speaking with Dr. Hayat Sindi on Monday.)

I write from beautiful Costa Rica where I've spent the week with my friend and colleague, Chris Wahl, providing a vision retreat for a corporate leader. This place is full of life and its rhythms.  We do our work accompanied by the crashing sounds of the Pacific surf, the varied music of birdsong, the deep voices of the howler monkeys who drop fruit pits on us from the trees and the rattle of thousands of tiny hermit crabs making their way across the soft sand of the beach in the mornings. Santa Teresa is a wild and peaceful place, different in character, but similar in spirit to the pristine lake in the Adirondacks for which our company is named. Being here, I am reminded of how renewing it is to spend time in the natural world, which is a true antidote to the wearying pace of urban American life. I hope you are able to find time and place to reconnect with the natural world this month.

When I interviewed Dr. Hayat Sindi to prepare her to be a guest on the radio show, we laughed together about her passionate and fast-paced conversation. I can't think of any leader more committed, courageous or vibrant than Hayat. Her gift is not only to translate science into practical uses, but also to find ways to enable science education for the talented young people of Saudi Arabia. Here is a visionary whose eyes see no limits to what can be done. You will gain energy and optimism by listening to our conversation next Monday. I hope you'll join us for an hour of vision and inspiration as Explorer Month continues.

Oh, and if you didn't get a chance to listen to Erin's conversation with Dr. Sasha Kramer of Haiti last week, do download it and enjoy the wonderful dialogue.

Very best,

Bringing a Vision of Empowerment to Haiti

On this week's radio show, Dr. Sasha Kramer of SOIL shared with listeners her work in Haiti. Once the richest colony in the world, Haiti is now a nation plagued by disease, poverty, high unemployment, pollution and low agricultural yield. SOIL, a non-profit, is working to equip and empower the people of Haiti to tackle these problems by focusing on improving sanitation and also providing nutrient-rich soil to Haitian farmers.

Many people in Haiti do not have access to toilets, thus drinking and bathing water is often contaminated with human waste. To tackle this problem, SOIL is bringing specially designed Ecological Sanitation toilets into communities. These toilets are the first step in a composting process that takes 8 months to 1 year, when the once human waste is then ready to be sold to Haitian farmers as safe, nutrient-rich soil for their fields.

Originally, these toilets were built as communal toilets to serve the needs of the greatest number at once. Sasha explained, "We are developing a household toilet model in which a monthly fee would cover the collections and treatment of wastes. That monthly fee would provide a source of income for entrepreneurs that want to get involved in the waste business - a great business for which there is always a need and never a shortage of raw materials. At SOIL, our vision isn't to be in the toilet and waste management business, but the consulting business. Once we develop a model that works, we want to share and teach that model to others who can carry the work forward in a sustainable way."

"We had a very exciting day yesterday," said Sasha. "It was the first time we had the families pay the monthly service fee - of the 21 households using toilets, 18 were able to pay the fee. Paying for services is a unique idea in Haiti as it has become a culture in which the people are accustomed to receiving free services from international aid organizations. As we continue to empower the people of Haiti to take care of their own needs, I envision a future Haiti in which there is no need for international aid organizations."

"While the people of Haiti are living with so little and are a people who face so much struggle every day, I would not call them poor. Many refer to Haiti as 'the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere' -- I prefer to say that is the most impoverished. The people of Haiti are resilient and the culture is one of genuine kindness and respect. Again and again I am humbled by the spirit of the Haitian people."

Perspective about Struggle...

"The struggles and challenges I once faced in my life before Haiti are easy to overcome when I view them from the perspective of people who don't have enough to eat yet are still able to welcome me into their home and share what they do have."
