Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a real live explorer? Maybe you've been following this week's big news about National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence and filmmaker James Cameron, who became the first human to reach the Mariana Trench's Challenger Deep, the Earth's deepest realm, solo.  His journey took years of planning, development of new technologies, and the courage to go alone to one of the coldest, darkest and most mysterious places on Earth. In collaboration with National Geographic Society and Rolex, his findings will be shared for educational and scientific purposes. Read more about Cameron's journey.

Welcome to a month of exploration on
Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life!

Throughout the month of April, I'll be talking with National Geographic Society Explorers -- true leaders in the quest for knowledge through exploration. You'll meet a cultural anthropologist who dedicates his life to using personal stories and cross-cultural learning to forge peace and positive social change at a people-to-people level; a technologist who envisions simple technologies that transform lives in places where the Internet is not available; and a science explorer whose mission is to find simple, low-tech diagnostic tools to monitor health in remote places and harsh conditions. And we'll be talking about what exploration means in a world where so much has already been discovered.

To kick off this amazing month, Executive Vice President for Mission Programs Terry Garcia is joining me on Monday, April 2, to talk about his vision for exploration at National Geographic Society. To me, Terry is as close to a real life Indiana Jones as you'll find. Educated as a lawyer, he has traveled the world to places most of us only dream of going, been awarded the Order of the Sun by the Government of Peru, and served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere for the Department of Commerce (NOAA) and also as Commissioner for the National Commission on BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. Since 1999, Terry has overseen mission programs at National Geographic Society, bringing focus, innovation and momentum to initiatives, scientific research and exploration that inspire us all. I hope you'll join me to hear the perspective of someone who is widely regarded as a visionary leader.

Very best,

Listen Live on Monday.

"Some believe the golden age of exploration is behind us. On the contrary, I believe we are at the beginning of our greatest age of exploration," commented Terry Garcia in a recent interview. Since joining National Geographic Society more than a dozen years ago, Garcia has implemented a vision of exploration that has revitalized the Society's mission programs and defined exploration in the broadest sense. Responsible for the Society's core mission programs, which support and manage more than 400 scientific field research, conservation and exploration projects annually, Garcia is in a unique position to comment. Join Host Kate Ebner to kick off a month dedicated to exploration with a truly visionary leader whose work connects science, research, education and even entertainment to bring the mysteries of our planet to all of us. More.

Leading International Greentech Collaboration

The population of the world's middle class continues to grow and consume more and more of the world's resources. On this week's radio program, Elle Carberry of the China Greentech Initiative pointed out, "There is a view that we will need the resources of five planets in order to support the standing population of the world over the next 50 years." Based in Beijing, Elle is working to help companies to accelerate the development, the adoption, and financing of their green technology solutions. Her vision is a world where a high standard of living doesn't deplete the planet's resources.

The China Greentech Initiative is a unique Chinese and international commercial collaboration platform comprised of 600 individuals from 100 organizations whose mission is to identify, develop and promote the use of green technology for the needs of China at this points in its evolution and in the future. Elle clarified, "We aren't asking industries to collaborate by sharing proprietary company information, but rather around the diagnosis and evaluation of the market." By sharing market knowledge, companies can more quickly get new green technologies to market.

"The creation and implementation of these technology solutions has to do with industries moving out of their traditional boxes," Elle said. "Innovation really can happen across the traditional boundaries of market spaces, companies and industries." In order to solve these pressing technology problems, The China Greentech Initiative invites companies to join a collaboration platform for a large, diverse range of parties that fit the five key roles in any industry:
  1. Sellers
  2. Buyer/Adopters
  3. Financiers
  4. Service providers
  5. Those who determine/create the policy environment

Companies from all over the world are contributing to the green technology solutions in China by filling the five industry roles. Elle said, "We may be doing our work in China right now, but the depletion of the world's resources is a global issue, and energy is a global business market." By defining the features of this market, Elle's organization has been a catalyst to involve many global corporations in innovations that can contribute significantly to long-term sustainability.

On how technology innovation links to sustainability....

"Technology innovation is about how we continue to evolve life on this planet. More and more of world's people are enjoying a higher standard of living.  We don't want to give up things that we love.  Technology innovation is a part of the necessary solution if we are going to sustain and improve life as we know it."
