Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

Where in your life are you telling yourself no? As a leadership coach, I pay attention to the "no's" that people tell themselves.  Too often, we assume that we can't have what we want. We tell ourselves "no" and slip into a mood of resignation rather then asking the person who might actually say yes. Why is this? By telling yourself no, you are saved from having to summon the courage to make a big request. You also spare yourself from having to figure out what you really want! Hmmm....

If you are willing to reflect on what you really want, frame the request and then actually ask the person who can help make it happen, you'll discover the power of shifting from being passive to acting with purpose in your life. And you might hear a big YES! As a good friend puts it, "Don't be the one to tell yourself no! Others will do that for you."

Whitney Forstner of Momentum Resources is a great example of a leader who has found a way for companies and working women to find a big yes instead of no. Whitney is redefining the paradigm of success for women while showing large and small companies how to use flexible and part-time talent for greatest benefit to their organizations. Whitney's own story has been the catalyst for her vision and her business model. I invite you to hear this out-of-the-box thinker on "Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life" next Monday. Learn how innovative companies are using flexibility to achieve big results.

Say "I Do!" and Step into Your Vision

Faith is taking the first step even when
you don't see the whole staircase.
~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Kelly Lewis was a successful executive at CapitalOne on the verge of a big promotion when she submitted her resignation to found The Bounce Collective. Kelly had realized that her true passion in life was to bring out the leadership abilities in others. Looking back at that moment, she recalled both a sense of certainty about her new path and fearfulness about making such a big change. On March 5th, Kelly Lewis of The Bounce Collective joined Kate on Visionary Leader Extraordinary Life to share her bold story of stepping into her vision and offer advice to listeners on how to step forward into that vision -- even when you aren't entirely sure how to make it happen.

Kelly reminded us, "You don't have to know it all. As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, it is all about taking the first step. It's ok if you can't see how you are going to get there, or how you will proceed beyond the first step. Sometimes just taking that first step opens up a whole new world of options to us that we couldn't see before." She also commented that when you move forward with your vision, you don't have to do it as a solo journey. "Don't be afraid to ask others for help along the way.  You might not know how to get to the finish, but along the journey, you will meet other people who have the answers you are looking for.

Four years after leaving Capital One, Kelly can vouch for the rewards that come from pursuing your calling: "If your vision is a marriage of your own passion and gifts and something that the world really needs, say 'I do' as soon as possible." If you realize you have a passion for something, don't wait. We don't have to make "all or nothing" choices all of the time. You can work on your passion on the side until you are ready to make it you full-time work. Once you identify and step into your calling, you will be so much happier with your own life. What really makes putting off your dreams to a time down the road a better idea?"

On sharing your vision...

"Protecting a vision - keeping it isolated from the input of others - is not always the best for the vision. Sometimes it is better to share it with others and allow the vision to grow, change, and evolve."
