Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

If passion had a nickname, it would be Kelly Lewis. I met Kelly poolside on a coaches' retreat in Austin, Texas in 2008 as she was just beginning to build her leadership development company and navigate a huge change in her own career direction. Since then, Kelly and I have supported each other as fellow entrepreneurs, coaches and leadership development innovators, and I've had the distinct pleasure of watching her launch the Bounce Collective -- an approach to teaching leadership that brings corporate executives into Middle Schools. One of the amazing things about the Bounce model is the philosophy of "leaders as learners" -- the adults learn as much or more about themselves as the kids do! Kelly and her team have had extraordinary success. Today, they are helping many for-profit companies do good while learning how to really lead.

Kelly turns the old leadership paradigm on its head --  and builds community while doing it. Smart, visionary and deeply thoughtful, here is a former corporate leader who can teach us all a thing or two about visionary leadership. Please join me to learn what caused Kelly to leave her top job and how her start-up is changing lives and organizations.

What Kids Really Need -- and Adults Need to Know

The radio show on February 27th was a gathering of kindred spirits. School Heads Andrew Kutt, Laura Kang and Tal Birdsey conversed with Kate about their remarkable schools and the communities that support them.

Andrew Kutt, founder and principal of the Oneness-Family School, started this Montessori-inspired school in 1988 and is finding that his vision of a school where children discover who they are and how to contribute to a global society is more relevant today than ever. Based in Chevy Chase, Maryland, OFS serves children from ages 2 through 8th grade and has gained local renown for its commitment to peace education, stewardship of the earth and teaching and nurturing the whole child. As Andrew put it, "We help children see that the world is one family and we create an environment where they are accepted and loved. When children learn in this kind of climate, they develop the self-confidence, happiness and compassion for others that leads to success later in life."

Laura Kang was drawn to the unique setting of the Eagle Cove School on Gibson Island in Pasadena, Maryland. Eagle Cove teaches children from pre-school to fifth grade to be stewards of the environment by composting, gardening, recycling, tracking energy use and caring for an oyster bed each year. These kids act as change agents in their own homes, helping their families become aware and involved as stewards of the magnificent resource that is the Chesapeake Bay.

A circle of parents gathered in Ripton, Vermont in 2000, eager to create a small community school for grades 6-9 rather than send their children by bus to the larger public schools down the mountain in the shire town of Middlebury. Tal Birdsey took a deep breath and stepped into the role of teacher, head of school and chief recruiter in that first year, gradually recruiting the first 12 kids to launch the North Branch School. Tal's approach has been written up in Yankee Magazine and his book, A Room for Learning: The Making of a School in Vermont
gives us an in-depth look at the school's first year and founding philosophy -- a read that will make you laugh, cry, shake your head and wish for a school just like North Branch in your community.

Hear these inspiring educators speak about what kids really need -- and the key role that community plays in ensuring the success of a school.

On gifts for the future ...

"If I was going to devote my life to anything, it had to be a legitimate cause. My two sons were the most legitimate cause I had. If I was going to retire from being a stay-at-home dad, I ha to do it for something extraordinary. A school, created from my hands and heart, was the greatest thing I could give my children - my gift to them and to the future."
