Dear Reader, Do you listen to National Public Radio? If you do, you're not alone. NPR delivers programming through a network of 944 independent stations across the country and more than 26.8 million weekly listeners. I wake up to public radio every day and catch the news during my morning and afternoon commutes. This was all part of the vision that created the public broadcasting system in the 60's and launched NPR in 1970.
Don Quayle, my next radio show guest, served as the very first president of NPR, a creative leader who helped build the regional and then national broadcast system and then stepped up to lead the nascent radio network in its earliest days. On Monday, February 20th, Don and I will look back at the vision of National Public Radio as he and his colleagues saw it in 1970 -- a rare opportunity to reflect upon a vision that became real and see it through the eyes of an original visionary.
I know you'll enjoy this fascinating story.
Very best,
Kate Ebner CEO Nebo Company |

Legendary Media Executive Gerry Laybourne: Lighting Up Opportunities for Women Everywhere
"If you light another women's candle it does nothing to diminish your candle....you get more light and more heat" ~ Rehmah, Uganda Mentor Walk Leader
Gerry Laybourne, Co-Founder of Oxygen Media and Founder of the Vital Voices Mentor Walks, was a guest on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life last week. Gerry shared her passion for supporting women and helping them to advance. While living in New York City and serving as the CEO of Oxygen Media, Gerry began taking daily walks in Central Park. Each day, Gerry walked with a different young professional, usually a young ambitious woman, and would offer her advice and share her experiences through these mentor walk conversations.
Gerry expanded on her idea of mentor walks at Oxygen Media. She led a Mentor Walk for over 400 people in Central Park, inviting accomplished women who were at the peak of their careers, such as Meryl Streep and Marlo Thomas, to come, walk and offer advice to young women. Vital Voices, a global women's organization founded by Hillary Clinton, partnered with Gerry to take the Mentor Walks to women around the world. Gerry believes that by empowering so many woman around the globe, the world will be a better place for all. She envisions that the United States, with a greater balance of power between the sexes, can lead the world in providing leadership that reflects the strengths of both men and women.
From these walks, and from her visionary career, Gerry observes that women behave differently than men in two important ways: "They don't toot their own horn, and they don't take risks." Gerry said she envisions a world in which, "Women stop waiting for their turn, but step up and take their turn." She hopes that women will accept the invitation to take risks, act more boldly and advocate for themselves more effectively. She recommends, "If you can't toot your own horn, toot another woman's horn."
Are you mentoring the young women in your organization? Are you encouraging them to encourage and support one another? Maybe you just need to take a walk....

The Inspired Leader on Kidscreen.com "Choose Ease" in 2012
Well, I'm more than one month into the year, one month into practicing my New Year's Intention to "choose ease." Back in December 2011, my radio show guest, Bette George, invited me and all of those listening to set an intention for the New Year. (Note: she invited us to set an intention, rather than a resolution.) I set the intention of "choosing ease" in 2012. By this, I meant that every single day, I would attempt to choose the simplest and easiest solutions to the day's challenges, rather than choosing the "best" or "highest" or most elaborate ones. I wanted to challenge myself to stop striving to do the best ever job of everything and relax into finding simpler, easier and more satisfying approaches and solutions. One month later, I find that this intention is fun to live! Sometimes, choosing ease means serving spaghetti sauce from the jar rather than making it from scratch. Sometimes, it means saying no to projects that require complex delivery or lots of uninspiring travel. Sometimes, it simply means letting someone else take the lead and concerning myself less with making sure that all t's are crossed and all I's are dotted, so to speak. What would happen in your life if you chose ease instead of most-effort-highest-standards striving? I'd love to know the intention you'd like to set for 2012 - share it on our Facebook page.
