Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

Resilence is a topic we teach in several of our workshops and programs. Successful leaders simply must develop the capacity for resilience in order to sustain the energy and focus needed to do great things. Resilience is about more than energy and focus, however. Resilience is about having the courage, optimism and faith to persist even when you are working against the odds. It's a mindset as well as a capacity.

Since 1992, I've kept a small black-and-white photograph of champion skiier Chris Waddell in my top desk drawer, even though I'd never met him personally. I take it out from time to time and ponder Chris's extraordinary life and the courage and resilience he has demonstrated. I was working in a post-graduate year at Middlebury College in 1988 when Chris arrived as a freshman. His devastating skiing accident that year stunned the campus. What he has done with his life since that accident left him without use of his legs is nothing short of inspiring.

Please don't miss my conversation with Chris next Monday, February 6. We'll be talking about his recent successful ascent to the top of Mount Kilamanjaro in Tanzania, what he has learned from his amazing life's journey and, of course, his vision for the future.

"It's not what happens to you. It's what you do with what happens to you." That sentence guides the path of a leader whose life story plays like a movie. It's also the mission statement of his foundation, One Revolution, which is dedicated to changing the way the world sees people with disabilities by highlighting our universal struggle. Chris Waddell was a promising young skier at Middlebury College in 1988 when a skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Waddell's journey to dare and ultimately to live fully is a source of inspiration today for everyone he meets. Join Host Kate Ebner to experience the voice, heart and spirit of the legendary Paralympic medal-winning athlete Chris Waddell, the first paraplegic to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro unassisted and perhaps the only one to be named by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.More.

An Angler's Perspective: Seeing Opportunity

On January 30, Chris Wood, CEO of Trout Unlimited (TU), joined Kate on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life. As Chris pointed out, those who work in the environmental field face  depressing statistics on the environment, including steep declines in water quality, the loss of open space, and the rising number of threatened and endangered species. It can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook with this ever-present view.

Chris and the team at TU take a different angle, approaching environmental challenges as tremendous opportunities to help recover fish and wildlife and to protect the best remaining habitats. Chris credits this attitude to being an "organization of anglers," saying, "anglers are a group of people who will stand in freezing water casting fur, feather and wires at river ghosts. By nature, a fisherman is optimistic - each cast of the line holds the possibility of catching the biggest fish of his life."

The optimistic approach is working. Despite the down economy where many environmental non-profits are struggling, TU has significantly exceeded its fundraising and membership goals. The staff at TU bring together a shared passion for the organization's mission to conserve, protect and restore North America's cold water fisheries and their watersheds and a contagious can-do spirit that's led to outstanding results for the organization and for the environment itself.

And what about Chris's vision? Picture healthy, clean water and fish in every stream and a new generation of young people enjoying fishing and connecting with the natural world. Imagine a collaborative stewardship in which we work together to preserve these treasures.

As you look at your own organization's challenges, can you frame them as opportunities and mobilize around delivering results? This is an excellent strategy to energizing your team towards achieving your organization's vision. And when planning your next company offsite, do consider a fishing trip or at least a hike.

Put On Your Own Oxygen Mask First

We all know the drill, if there's an emergency on an airplane and you're travelling with kids, put your own oxygen mask on first. Why? Because if you pass out, you're in no position to help anyone else survive. It makes sense, doesn't it? This commonsense rule of the skies applies on the ground as well. You'll be of little to no use to the people who depend upon you if you don't take care of yourself first. The logic works, but it's still a hard lesson for people to practice. Read on....
