An Angler's Perspective: Seeing Opportunity
On January 30, Chris Wood, CEO of Trout Unlimited (TU), joined Kate on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life. As Chris pointed out, those who work in the environmental field face depressing statistics on the environment, including steep declines in water quality, the loss of open space, and the rising number of threatened and endangered species. It can be difficult to maintain a positive outlook with this ever-present view.
Chris and the team at TU take a different angle, approaching environmental challenges as tremendous opportunities to help recover fish and wildlife and to protect the best remaining habitats. Chris credits this attitude to being an "organization of anglers," saying, "anglers are a group of people who will stand in freezing water casting fur, feather and wires at river ghosts. By nature, a fisherman is optimistic - each cast of the line holds the possibility of catching the biggest fish of his life."
The optimistic approach is working. Despite the down economy where many environmental non-profits are struggling, TU has significantly exceeded its fundraising and membership goals. The staff at TU bring together a shared passion for the organization's mission to conserve, protect and restore North America's cold water fisheries and their watersheds and a contagious can-do spirit that's led to outstanding results for the organization and for the environment itself.
And what about Chris's vision? Picture healthy, clean water and fish in every stream and a new generation of young people enjoying fishing and connecting with the natural world. Imagine a collaborative stewardship in which we work together to preserve these treasures.
As you look at your own organization's challenges, can you frame them as opportunities and mobilize around delivering results? This is an excellent strategy to energizing your team towards achieving your organization's vision. And when planning your next company offsite, do consider a fishing trip or at least a hike.

The Inspired Leader on Kidscreen.com Put On Your Own Oxygen Mask First
We all know the drill, if there's an emergency on an airplane and you're travelling with kids, put your own oxygen mask on first. Why? Because if you pass out, you're in no position to help anyone else survive. It makes sense, doesn't it? This commonsense rule of the skies applies on the ground as well. You'll be of little to no use to the people who depend upon you if you don't take care of yourself first. The logic works, but it's still a hard lesson for people to practice. Read on....
