Dear Reader,
Welcome to 2012! I hope you enjoyed a truly relaxing break at the end of last year. Many of you requested the name of John O'Donahue's "Blessing for a New Beginning" so I've included this beautiful blessing in this newsletter for you.
As I listen to friends' New Year's resolutions this week, I must admit I'm glad Bette George and I focused on an alternative approach to bringing in a new year in the last radio show. Research shows that most New Year's Resolutions fall away for good on the third Monday in January! There really is a much better way to change your life in 2012, as Bette explained to listeners last month.
January is National Mentoring Month. My own mentor, Frank Kelley, was one of the greatest influences of my life, and I'm proud that Nebo offers mentoring programs to help other people learn how to make the most of mentoring. Nancy Lamberton, head of our mentoring business, has been creating terrific content for Nebo's Facebook and Twitter communications this month. Learn more about how to be a great mentor or mentee by following us there. We've set an intention for 2012 to share what we know about mentoring, so stay tuned!
Michele Booth Cole leads a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C. dedicated to serving abused children and helping solve the widespread problem of child abuse. I first heard her vision three years ago and haven't forgotten her powerful message. You may have read her blog in the Washington Post or heard her speak on NPR. Michele is a sought-after advocate for children and a passionate visionary who brings fierce courage, great tenderness and sharp intellect to her purpose. When she speaks, I listen. I hope you will, too.
Cheers to 2012!

Executive Director, Safe Shores, The DC Children's Advocacy Center |
As the recent Penn State scandal reminded us, child sexual abuse is a silent epidemic around the world. In the U.S., a shocking one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before their eighteenth birthdays. Meet Michele Booth Cole, Executive Director of Safe Shores -- The DC Children's Advocacy Center, an organization dedicated to working directly with child victims of sexual and physical abuse in Washington, D.C. From the front lines, Michele has developed her own urgent and truly compelling vision of a society in which children are safe -- and adults act as a community to keep them that way.
Join Host Kate Ebner to learn how to create safety for children in your community. You will be inspired by Michele's courage and the work of her organization. Learn more.

Starting the New Year with Clear Intention and a Fresh Vision for 2012
How we spend our days is, of course,
how we spend our lives.
~ Annie Dillard
In December, Leadership and Life Coach Bette George joined Kate on Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life to ring out the old year and ring in the new one. Bette shared her thoughts on intention, and living life on purpose. Together, Kate and Bette spoke about how to say good bye to the passing year and how to prepare for a new one. To ring out the old year, they recommend first taking time to pause and take stock of the events, achievements, challenges, relationships and growth that occurred. After acknowledging this in a spirit of appreciation and gratitude, the next step is CELEBRATE!
To prepare for a new year, Bette suggests setting an intention for the year. As she put it, "an intention has much more to do with being, than doing." How do you want to BE in the new year? She also gave an example from her own life about how she practices being intentional every day. When Bette awakes, she spends a moment in the spirit of gratitude. She then sets and intention for that day. Your intention may be to be calm, to be positive, to have fun, to project confidence, etc. As you go about the day, you hold this idea in mind and continually align your attitudes actions with it. In this way, you set the tone and influence the experience that you have -- and that you give others.
Bette shared her own intention for 2012: to be fully present to friends and family and connected to the earth. While this may sound a bit lofty, she explained that like visioning, an intention should be aspirational and inspiring. As she moves through 2012, she will use the spirit of her intention to make decisions and plans with this underlying purpose.
What are your intentions for today? For 2012? For your career? For your life? Have fun exploring your intentions and, as Bette often urges us -- lead your life on purpose!

On vision...
A resolution is something we live up to. A vision is something we live into, something that inspires us in a very special way.

Blessing for a New Beginning by John O'Donahue, from
To Bless the Space Between Us
In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.
For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.
It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.
Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plentitude opening before you.
Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life's desire.
Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.
