The "What's Next" Moment
The Inspired Leader Blog On Kidscreen.com

Inspired Leader BlogIn this week's blog entry on Kidscreen.com, Kate writes about The "What's Next" Moment. The January 2011 issue of Oprah Magazine trumpeted the headline "What's Your Next Chapter?" the same month that we hosted a visioning retreat for eight executives. Why is this question on everyone's mind? We all seem to be exploring it. More.

How to Make A Gutsy Transition

As an observer of human nature and student of adult development, Master Coach Chris Wahl became fascinated with how we navigate transitions. Last week on the radio show, Chris named the many kinds of transitions that we face. Some transitions are the result of changing circumstances such as getting married, retirement or losing a job. Other transitions come from within as we outgrow our old outlook and yearn for something new and sometimes hard to name.

As Chris pointed out, "There isn't enough support for people when they are in transition." She shared ideas to help you tap into your courage and be "gutsy" during times of transition. In the spirit of mutual support, we hope you'll share these ideas with those you know going through a transition right now.

Find a good listener to talk to. A good listener is someone who can listen without judging.

Speak what you desire and love. Begin by answering the question, "what would I like more of in my life?"  You might start by writing it in your journal, and then sending it in an e-mail to a friend. Get the courage to speak it out loud to a good listener. Once you speak your desire, it will be real in the world, and not just an idea in the back of you mind.  For other great guiding questions, listen to the podcast of this show.

Engage with yourself. Know what you are thinking and feeling. Honor and acknowledge those thoughts and feelings.

Honor the end, and the beginning. Acknowledge the fact that you are letting go and that you are starting new.

Tap into what gives you energy. Eat right, exercise, sleep. Surround yourself with people who bring you light and positive energy. Limit your time engaging with people and in activities that drain your energy.

Have faith in what you can't see. Put one foot in front of the other, taking one step at a time.

On finding what you love...

When we tap into what we love, then we can tap into what it is that we might want to create. And where what the world needs and what we love come together is where we have something we can create to give out to the world.
