Dear Reader,

So....why are there so few women at the top?

On Monday, November 7, SVP Susan Penfield and SVP Karen Dahut of Booz Allen Hamilton will shed light on what it takes to succeed at the highest levels as a woman business leader.  I hope you'll join me to hear their stories and learn from the wisdom of their experiences. Both Susan and Karen are well known within their company and industries for driving superb business results and for helping other women navigate the pathway to executive success.  This week's program promises not only a compelling vision of women as business leaders, but also useful personal insights about success that are accessible and relevant for women (and men) striving to make an impact through leadership. Is that you?

Listen and learn with me as I talk with Susan Penfield and Karen Dahut about executive success.
Kate Ebner

Tips for Landing Your Dream Job...and Rocking It Once You Do

Earlier this week, Rachel Gutter shared three of her top tips for landing your dream job and rocking it once you do. Here are the rest:
  1. Wander. Take risks. Don't stick to projects and jobs where you are most confident and comfortable - your dream job may be found in an area you have yet to discover.
  2. Be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. If you want to try something new or different, you may need to take a step down before taking a step up. Think of it not as a step down, but as a developmental learning opportunity.
  3. Find a mentor who has your dream job and wow him or her. Meet with your mentor and share your dreams and goals. Ask good questions of your mentor, and demonstrate your appreciation for their time by putting their advice and guidance into practice.
  4. Be persistent. Don't give up. If you meet someone at a conference that you would love to know more about, make sure that you 'accidentally' bump into them each day.
  5. Plan to work harder than you ever have and maybe harder than you ever will. Go into each new job planning to give it your all.
  6. Make yourself indispensable. Go above and beyond the call of duty. Make your employer wonder how they ever survived without you.
  7. No task is too small. Don't focus on whether or not a task is included in your job description. If it needs to happen, make it happen.
  8. Don't assume people are just like you. Each person is different. Just because you like something a particular way or our comfortable with something, doesn't mean that others do as well.
  9. Don't forget: there's a lot more to life than work. You will be your best self at work if you are your best self outside the workplace. Make sure to nourish those parts of yourself that might not be fed during the regular workday.

Buildings as teachers...

For decades we have focused on the who and the what of education, but not the where.  Buildings function as teacher, too. Students learn by growing organic vegetables, discussing nutrition at the lunchroom table, monitoring energy created by solar panels on the roof or windmills on campus and learning about energy efficiency and renewable technologies. This is a much more engaging way for students to learn.
