Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

When we put the call out for nominations of visionary leaders to be inspiring guests on our radio show, Rachel Gutter was nominated by not one, but THREE people, unbeknownst to each other. A true Generation Y leader, Rachel brings passion, humor and guts to her role as head of the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council. She's been all over the nation, talking with students, educators and communities about the greening of our schools. Her vision is BIG: not only to improve the safety and quality of our schools, but also to educate the children of today to be the environmental stewards of tomorrow. Please join me for a lively conversation with a young visionary, who is making her vision real every day. I think you'll love her perspective and her energy!
Kate Ebner

U.S. Green Building Council's Rachel Gutter and Her Powerful Vision-in-Action to Green Our Schools

Rachel Gutter Vertical

A substantial number of our nation's schools are in poor or dangerous conditions - they harbor unhealthy levels of dust and mold, making the air unfit to breathe. With 20% of our country in school, Rachel Gutter recognized a need for making schools healthier and higher performing, while saving energy and taxpayer dollars. Rachel brought this idea to the forefront of today's education discussion, and aims to have green schools for everyone within this generation. Join Kate and Rachel to learn how her work through the U.S. Green Building Council's Center for Green Schools is driving improvements in the lives of children and teachers around the country - and educating a new generation of sustainability natives, students fluent in the language of green. All in a day's work, Rachel has met with former presidents, toured cities with mayors, lunched with the First Lady and been featured on CNN. You'll love the gutsy story of how this English major landed her dream job greening our schools. When the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council was established in 2010 to serve as the driver for the green schools movement, USGBC appointed Rachel Gutter to take the reins. Five Steps of Values Based Leadership at Work

On last week's show, Mark Fernandes shared the story behind Values Based Leadership at Luck Companies. Mark said, "Values Based Leadership is doing good to do well. If you can get at the individuals in the organization to the extent that they feel engaged and inspired, that will drive business success more than anything. We are convinced of this - we can see it in our numbers." We'd like to thank Mark Fernandes for sharing the five steps of Values Based Leadership - and we encourage you to try these at home and in the office!
  1. Aware: Be self-aware, aware of your surroundings, your situtation
  2. Align: Get yourself aligned, until you are "straight and beautiful
  3. Understand: Understand others, the room, your audience
  4. Adapt: Meet people where they are
  5. Act: Do the right thing, for the right reason

On human potential...

All human beings have this thing called human potential...and it is largely untapped. Values based leadership at Luck Companies was built to tap into that potential -- to help people be "straight and beautiful."
