Designing Large-scale systems:
Guessing is not an Option. ST_2985689

Solar DHW systems with collector surface area bigger than 1000 Ft2 (30m2) are considered commercial scale and as such require more scrupulous planning and execution.

Before detailed design can be done, many important planning steps have to be made:

·         Collecting of basic information

·         Rough dimensioning

·         Cost estimate

·         Simulation

·         Design optimization

            and only then

·         Detailed Planning

Let us start today by talking about the first step: Initial object data input - or Collecting of Basic Information.

You see - because of varying energy supply from the sun, we need to know precisely the volume of hot water consumption, the consumption profile and desired water temperature. By having fewer variables in equation the result could be more accurate. To have that information is critical because all further dimensioning tasks are based on it.

The values for DHW consumption data given in different literature have been found too high in practice; and result of their use is over-sizing of the solar system with all other consequences. Often these references are old, and have been calculated to cover highest possible demand factor. Imagine - you are just broke-even finishing the job and the customer is demanding to fix the overheating issues on warranty... - nice prospective, isn't it?

Product Profile:  RESOL WMZ energy meter.

RESOL WMZ energy meter. The RESOL WMZ calorimeter module is a processing unit that makes available state-of-the-art electronic microprocessor intelligence for heat measurement in every measurement range. In combination with contact (pulse) water meters of different flow ranges, it is designed for use in solar  or hydronic heating systems from small residential to large commercial scale.

WMZ_SmallThe WMZ energy meter is available pre-packaged with temperature sensors and contact (pulse) water meter V-40 in seven different versions. Adjustable impulse rate in steps of 1L/ pulse permits precise flow reading right across the measurement range spectrum of 0 - 99 L/pulse.

V40_Small

RESOL V- 40 is a Multi--Jet contact water meter. The Multi-Jet impeller meter is a completely dry runner designed with a carbide bearing for the impeller and a magnetic coupling. The meters produce a closed contact electrical pulse output via a reed switch connected to the processing unit. The V-40 Multi-Jet contact water meter offers the benefit that an even load is applied on the impeller, making this meter largely insensitive to faults on the inlet and outlet side. With maximum working pressure of 232 PSI (16 bar) and maximum operating temperature up to 266 °F (130 °C), V-40 meters are characterized by extremely high measurement accuracy and excellent measuring stability even when subjected to extreme loads. The V-40 is available as a separate ad-on kit including a pair of sensors and sensor wells. The model  V40-06 is the smallest meter in ¾" NPT with nominal flow rate of 2.64 GPM (0.6 m3/h) and V40-150 is the largest one in 2" NPT and nominal flow rate of 66 GPM (15m3/h).

The RESOL WMZ calorimeter module offers all the performance features of the compact processing unit. The heat quantity produced is calculated from these impulses and the temperature difference measured between supply and return using predefined parameters (glycol type, concentration, heat capacity etc.). The temperature sensors are platinum type Pt1000 supplied with NPT sensor wells.

Graphic-display for indication of supply and return temperature, heat quantity, energy output, flow rate and sensor faults (accumulated values are stored in the case of a power failure). WMZ is well suited for solar systems with 0 ... 70% propylene-glycol-mixtures, closed or open loop systems.  Built-in data interface (VBus) permits the processing unit to be integrated into universal RESOL VBus system.

Now about the practical use: the RESOL WMZ calorimeter module can be installed as a stand-alone energy meter, or as an ad-on module to RESOL DeltaSol BX, ES, E or MX controllers. It communicates via VBus with RESOL remote displays SD3 and large customizable GA3. In conjunction with RESOL data logger DL2 up to 16 individual WMZ modules could be monitored remotely from a single location.WMZ_Vbus Large

In applications where third party differential controllers are installed, adding WMZ could solve the problems of system monitoring, energy metering, remote displaying and data logging.

The RESOL WMZ calorimeter module is available as 115V version or as special order in 12V/DC.
