SAVE's Minnesota Teen Campaign Reaches 5 Million Youth on Facebook
SAVE's Facebook campaign targeted to help teenagers in Minnesota, reached 5 million youth in the state during September through November. The Facebook initiative is a part of a larger prevention campaign funded by the Minnesota Department of Public Health (MDH). In addition to reaching teens, the fall campaign also focused on American Indian communities in Minnesota  through transit signs and print ads. SAVE will launch an MDH-funded campaign in the spring of 2011 targeting  adult men.

That is what we do at SAVE; it is why we are here. We are here for you and the thousands who come to us each year looking for help, searching for answers and support from someone who understands.

Patrick Cutter Completes MHANTS Cross Country Ride
Patrick CutterPatrick Cutter, a suicide prevention advocate from Virginia Beach, Va, has successfully completed his incredible journey: to ride a bicycle from the farthest point north accessible by road in the United States, Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to the farthest point south in Key West, Fla. The goal of the Mental Health Awareness North to South ride (MHANTS) was to raise awareness and understanding about mental illness as well as raise money for SAVE.

Patrick started his ride June 28 near Deadhorse and traveled through Canada and the U.S. The 6500 mile journey took him through 12 states across the heart of the country. Several community events were held along the way by people wanting to support and encourage Patrick as he made his way to Key West. The events culminated with a gathering in Miami, Fla that served as a celebration for Patrick's accomplishments as well as a fundraiser for SAVE.

Patrick has documented his adventure on the website www.mhants.com. The site includes detailed information on the cyclist's route and an insightful blog that features unique and interesting photos that further illustrate the experiences he encountered along the way.

Editor's Note: A community in Florida hosted Patrick as a part of a larger suicide prevention awareness event. See Ashley Seeler's article below.

SAVE Welcomes New Office Manager
Bridget MonsonI am Bridget Monson, SAVE's Office Manager.  I have spent the last 20 years managing human and veterinary healthcare organizations.  I graduated from Carlson School of Management with a major in finance and received my Master's in Healthcare Administration in 2006.  For the past three years, I have also found time to volunteer for BART (Basic Animal Rescue Training) as a member of the Board of Directors and serving as treasurer.  I have lived most of my life in Shakopee, Minnesota and enjoy spending quality family time with my husband, grown daughter and 14-year-old son.  I am an avid animal lover and have four furry friends at home.

I am thankful for this opportunity to work for SAVE.  I want to help bring awareness and reduce the stigma that is too often associated with mental illness and suicide as well as understand the causes of suicide and the impact that it has on the survivors who are left behind.  My hope will be to bring the next level of operational efficiency to SAVE as well as building relationships with our donors, volunteers, board, and vendors. I am looking forward to working with you and getting to know each of you in my role as office manager.  Please feel free to contact me at bmonson@save.org or 952-746-7998.

Florida Community Initiates Suicide Prevention Effort

by Ashley Seeler, Administrative Assistant

Palm Bay FLThere are numerous ways in which individuals can provide inspiration for the promotion of suicide education and awareness. One particular individual, Patrick Cutter, chose a slightly different path to encourage others to familiarize themselves with SAVE's mission (as mentioned earlier in this edition of VOICES of SAVE). In order to accomplish the goal of providing education, awareness, and reducing the stigma that comes along with mental illness, Patrick planned an extensive and intensive bicycle trip that took him from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska all the way to Key West, Fla. In order to make his mission clear, Patrick titled the ride MHANTS which stands for Mental Health Awareness North to South.

SAVE Publications To Be Added To The Best Practices Registry
Three brochures produced by SAVE have been approved for inclusion in the Suicide Prevention Resource Center's (SPRC) Best Practices Registry (BPR). The brochures are the only publications like it in the U.S. that have been reviewed for accuracy, likelihood of meeting objectives, and adherence to program design standards.

The
BPR is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and identifies, reviews and disseminates information about best practices that address specific objectives of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. The BPR is used as a resource for suicide prevention materials by public health organizations, schools and nonprofit agencies througout the country.

The three publications are What is Depression? A Suicide Prevention Guide for Young People; Parents as Partners: A Suicide Prevention Guide for Parents and Suicide: Coping
with the Loss of a Friend or Loved One. For more information on SAVE's prevention and grief support materials, visit the brochures and printed materials section of save.org

VOICES of SAVE is a production of Suicide Awareness Voices of Education. For more information, go to save.org or call 952-946-7998.
