The Many Faces of Change
by Dan Reidenberg, Psy.D.

Change is never easy, no matter what the change is.  Whether talking about changing your route to work in the morning because of a stalled car blocking traffic or change resulting from a move across the country, change is just hard on people.  And yet, change is inevitable and happens all day long, every day, we just don't pay much attention to it until or unless it is directly impacting us in a really big way.

SAVE Introduces New Director of Survivor and Bereavement Programs, Expands Grief Support Services
by Franklin Cook

Franklin CookI am Franklin Cook, SAVE's Director of Survivor and Bereavement Programs, a new position recently created to "proactively reach out to suicide survivors and develop and implement ways of engaging the community, and to continue the process of dialog and healing."

SAVE has positioned strengthening suicide bereavement programs, outreach, resources, and systems as one of the organization's  core priority areas in the new strategic plan and I am responsible for, in the words of Executive Director Dan Reidenberg, "making SAVE an organization (survivors) can count on to help them in their time of need and beyond."

Families and Friends Gather at the Walk for Mental Health
Walk for Mental Health 2009
By Pamela Irrgang

People participate in SAVE's annual Walk for Mental health for a variety of reasons. Some see it as an opportunity to help raise money for suicide prevention or awareness for mental illness. Others see an opportunity to join with friends and family to remember loved ones who have been lost to suicide. Melinda Benson walked for friends that have mental illness and says "the walk was a way for me to help people that I know with mental illness. I plan on walking this year and inviting friends to join me to get the word out."

Whether participating individually or as a part of a larger group, you are invited to join a community of suicide survivors and mental health advocates at the 7th Annual Walk for Mental Health, presented by The Walser Foundation, August 14, 8 a.m. at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. The event raises money for SAVE's programs and helps fight the stigma associated with mental illness.

SAVE Supporter Bikes North to South for Suicide Prevention
by Patrick Cutter

Patrick CutterMy name is Patrick Cutter and I am a survivor of both depression and losing someone to suicide. I don't want to lose another friend to suicide nor do I want anyone else to lose a friend or family member.

The MHANTS (Mental Health Awareness North to South) ride is a North to South cycling fundraiser to benefit the SAVE organization. It will be an attempt to ride from the farthest point North (accessible by road) in the United States, Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to the farthest point South, Key West, Florida. Our goal is to raise awareness, understanding about mental illness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide.

SAVE Fashion Show a Success
2010 FSOver 200 guests enjoyed seeing local celebrities walk the runway at SAVE's 5th Annual Fashion Show presented by the Walser Foundation in May.

Radio and television show personalities, news anchors and reporters, along with a teen Abercrombie & Fitch model were fitted and fashioned with the new summer styles for the event held in Excelsior, MN.

Clothing stores provided the outfits of all sizes, fabrics and colors that guests loved as they were all priced between $25 and $125.00.  Hair and make-up was provided by Mark & Lyn Steine and The Ovations Team.  Mark's own professional models danced the runway and made the crowd go wild as they danced to the music of The Scotts under the tent overlooking a large, pristine lake.  Local restaurants donated food and desserts that accompanied food from Bay View Event Center where the show took place.

Paul Douglas, founder of WeatherNation, started off the night with a few words about his deep passion for SAVE's mission and Board member Marti Nyman's sharing information with guests about the programs and work of SAVE.
Sponsors, guests and a spectacular silent auction helped net SAVE over $8,000 at the Fashion Show.  We thank all of the sponsors, guests and volunteers who helped make the night so special for everyone!

Thank You to the Walser Foundation for Their Support!
