SAVE Adds Full-Time Staff
Rachel Reese, SAVE's part-time administrative assistant since May 2008, moved to a full-time position on March 8. Rachel, who is finishing her master's degree in Counseling and Psychological Services in May, will provide needed support for SAVE's programs and services. In addition to her current responsibilities, she will focus additional time on volunteer, speaking and survivor initiatives.   
 
Combination Antidepressant Therapy May Be More Effective for Major Depression Than Monotherapy

Growing Information on Depression in Expectant and New Fathers

Although a large body of research has documented the risk factors for and negative effects of depression in mothers, little is known about depression in expectant or new fathers. This article reviews the limited but growing literature about prenatal and postpartum depression in fathers. It highlights recent findings, identifies areas for future research, and suggests a preliminary conceptual framework that emphasizes the co-parental relationship.
 
The goal is to improve our understanding of relational factors that may underlie depression in new fathers.

That changed slightly last week when the Google search engine started automatically giving a suggestion of where to call after receiving a search seemingly focused on suicide.

Annual Suicide Awareness Memorial Takes Place May 1st
SAM Faces
Join us for the 21st annual Suicide Awareness Memorial, May 1st, 2010 at Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina, MN for a remembrance and tribute to lives lost to suicide. Listen to personal stories and experience a moving visual tribute.
 
The keynote speaker for this year's event is Sue Opheim, a survivor and recipient of the American Association of Suicidology's Survivor of the Year AwardRegistration is at 8:30 a.m. and the Memorial is from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A $10 donation is suggested. Breckenridge High School Wins Student Video Competition
Breckenridge HS
SAVE, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) are pleased to congratulate Breckenridge High School, winner of the Minnesota Suicide Prevention Student Video Competition.
 
The video was selected from a field of 13 participants representing schools throughout Minnesota and was chosen by a review committee comprised of national experts from the field of suicide prevention and representatives from SAVE and the MSHSL. The 6-minute video portrays a teenage girl battling mental illness and substance abuse and is experiencing thoughts of suicide. A group of fellow students recognizes that something is wrong and take the appropriate action to help their friend.

Whether your preference is walking or riding, pitching wedges or sipping wine, a stroll around a lake or a walk down the runway, SAVE's fundraising events offer a variety of ways to support suicide prevention and help build awareness for our cause in the community.
 
SAVE is headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota and although our suicide prevention awareness campaigns and educational materials have a national reach, a number of our events take place in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area.

Lesley Zaun 
Leslie Zaun
As an experienced attorney working for the large Minneapolis based firm Faegre and Benson, Lesley Zaun is busy all of the time.  However, despite what is on her desk and inbox from clients, Lesley also finds time to devote to SAVE  as a member of SAVE's Board of Directors. 
 
For the last 5 years she has maintained a deep connection to SAVE and combines the analytical skills from her legal training with personal and emotional reason for her dedication to SAVE. Lesley lost a cousin to suicide when she was young and had a brother who suffered from depression. "Based on my personal experience," she said, "the aspect of helping people who suffer from depression is the part of SAVE's message that I find appealing."

SAMHSA Launches National Suicide Prevention Campaign for Teens
 
We Can Help UsThe Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), along with the Ad Council and the Inspire USA Foundation, launched a new Teen Suicide Prevention public service advertising campaign, the first teen suicide prevention effort from SAMHSA to utilize a national mass media strategy, as well as a robust digital outreach to troubled teens.
