DECA School-based Enterprises Update
Greetings!
December is a great time of year to find inspiration and new ideas for your school-based enterprise. All around you retailers are finding creative ways to draw customers into stores and make purchases. If a promotion or strategy catches your attention consider implementing something similar for your school store. Trying something new could pay off and generate new sales.
December is also the time of year to begin putting the final touches on your SBE certification or re-certification documentation. All materials must be postmarked by January 13, 2012, and submitted to DECA Inc. You can find certification guidelines and details at http://www.deca.org/sbe/certification.

Decorating Your SBE
By Krys Ellis, SBE Advisory Council Member
The Swamp Shop decorates the store for every season/holiday. The store managers create a holiday-themed way of putting up the entire student store members' names on the wall. This past summer, some of the DECA members came in August and painted the store with chalkboard paint. This enabled Swamp Shop staff to redecorate each season with chalk to create a seasonal or holiday environment. It also gives the staff the opportunity to be creative.
2011-12 started with everyone who worked in the Swamp Shop signing their names on the wall using different colored chalk. Some also wrote "positive quotes" on the walls. In October, we decorated with Halloween decorations that included pumpkins, black cats and ghosts. The staff also put up orange lights and other Halloween props. In November, a giant tree with leaves falling was the avenue for the names.
In December, a huge fire place is created with stockings hung for each Swamp Shop worker and the staff hung holiday lights around the store. In addition, we offer holiday specials the week before our break which includes: hot chocolate with candy canes, hot apple cider, sugar cookies from Otis Spunkmeyer with holiday sprinkles. Future plans include: January-snowflakes, February-valentines, March-shamrocks, April-flowers, May-suns, June-graduation caps for the seniors.

| Finish Line Assists Local SBE
Matthew B., a Finish Line store manager in Georgia, reached out to a local DECA chapter operating a school-based enterprise and assisted the chapter members in several ways. Lanier Charter Career Academy in Gainesville, GA operates a school-based enterprise which sells toys, decorations and snacks. When Matthew realized that the school operated a school store, he offered to make a visit and talk to the students about merchandising, marketing, sales and even helped the students develop a layaway program.
As a direct result of his visit to the school, he has hired two DECA members as staff at his Finish Line store. This is a great example of how DECA's national partnerships can have an impact at the local level. |
SBE Webinar Archived A webinar was conducted in October aimed at educating DECA advisors about school-based enterprises and the certification program standards SBEs must achieve to obtain gold-level certification from DECA. If you missed the original webinar you can view the archived version at http://www.deca.org/page/avlc. |
