Greetings!
With the first few months of the school year behind us, I hope your experience has been rewarding. The fall is always my favorite time of the year, because it's the beginning of change. New leaders find their vibrant colors, conferences energize DECA members and advisors, and DECA activities are in full force. You can certainly catch the DECA spirit in the crisp air!
Hopefully your members have had an opportunity to experience DECA beyond your local chapter - either at a district or state/provincial activity.
In this issue for new advisors, we're discussing membership and competitive events. Please do not hesitate to contact me or your association advisor if we can be of assistance.

DECA's Competitive Events
DECA's Competitive Events Program is an incredible tool for your curriculum. As an integral part of the classroom curriculum, DECA's industry-validated competitive events are aligned with National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism.
Competition begins at the local/district level and winners qualify to compete at the association level. Association winners then advance to the International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Check with your association advisor about any special information you should know regarding your association's operation of competitive events. Generally speaking, there are three kinds of competitive events: role play events, written events and online events.

Role-Play Events
Principles of Business Administration Events, Team Decision Making Events, Individual Series Events
These events involve a multiple-choice career cluster exam and an interview, role-plays or case study with a judge. They are classified by industry and career cluster. See the DECA Guide for exact offerings and guidelines.
Performance indicators are the basis of the content of the career cluster exams and interactive component for each of these events. Performance indicators, much like the objectives in your curriculum, are specific knowledge/skills categorized by instructional area. In preparation for these events, members should download the performance indicators for each event at http://www.deca.org/competitions/highschool/. There is a very strong likelihood that the instructional areas and performance indicators are already part of your curriculum, thus helping your members attain knowledge for the competitive events in your classroom.

Written Events
Business Operations Research Events, Chapter Team Events, Business Management and Entrepreneurship Events, Marketing Representative Events, Professional Selling Events
Most of DECA's written events require a written project report submitted in an official DECA folio as well as a complementing prepared presentation. Professional Selling Events do not require a written project, but require participants to take a career cluster exam. The Marketing Representative Events also require participants to take a career cluster exam. All of these events should be started early in the school year because of the preparation involved. See the DECA Guide for exact offerings and guidelines. Many DECA advisors assign sections of the projects as they cover topics throughout the year, so that by the end of the first semester, members have a strong foundation for the written project.

Online Events
Stock Market Game, Virtual Business Challenge Retail, Virtual Business Challenge Sports
DECA's online events challenge members in electronic business simulations in the stock market, a retail outlet or sports franchise. They compete against other members in their region online from their seats in the classroom to earn the opportunity to compete at the international level. It's too late to start the Stock Market Game this year, but take a look and be ready for next year!
