Natives Won't Be 'Left Out of the Tent,' Obama Designate Says

ARLINGTON, Va.-On the cusp of his expected confirmation as Interior secretary, Sen. Ken Salazar (D-Colo.) sought Monday to reassure tribal leaders that the Obama administration is serious about Native American issues and promised his department would work "hand in hand" with Indian communities. Among the most pressing legislative concerns is the reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act; trust reform that would overcome the tangle of land disputes now mired in the courts and bureaucracy; and the swift designation and confirmation of the assistant secretary for Indian affairs.

I was intrigued by Yolo County Supervisor Matt Rexroad's guest opinion last Sunday in The Daily Democrat regarding the impasse between the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians and Yolo County over our planned transformation of Cache Creek Casino Resort into a world-class destination resort. The supervisor stated our inability to reach agreement over the tribe's project "has nothing to do with business, much less money." In fact, the tribe's project, and the resulting impasse with the county, is about both.

Amended suit filed to stop casino1/23/2009, ARGUS-COURIER
An East Bay attorney has filed an amended lawsuit this month on behalf of a local organization and several residents determined to stop the construction of a proposed casino and resort complex in Rohnert Park. Attorney Stephan Volker filed the lawsuit on Jan. 12 on behalf of the Stop the Casino 101 Coalition, as well as 12 of its members - including City Councilmember Mike Healy of Petaluma - and two other Sonoma County residents.

Industry Reacts to Kentucky Internet Gambling Ruling and Appeal

To say that it has been an eventful week for the internet gambling and online poker industries would be an enormous understatement. A three judge Court of Appeals panel overturned a lower court decision on Tuesday, preserving 141 of the world's largest internet gambling domain names for the foreseeable future. On Wednesday, the Commonwealth of Kentucky appealed to its Supreme Court. Poker News Daily took the pulse of the online poker industry to gauge its reaction to the recent events.

Amador County respectfully requests the Court to alter or amend its judgment of January 8, 2009 by reversing its dismissal of the First amended Complaint.   This action is permited by Federal Rule 59(e) to correct a clear legal error and to prevent a manifest injustice.
