Vegas casino giants feeling the financial crisis11/21/2008 News.com Las Vegas: UNTIL this economic downturn, the one place that seemed less impacted by hard times was the world's gambling capital. Times are tough for Las Vegas casinos, as for every other sector of the ailing US economy. "When we look back historically, this is one of the most severe downturns we've ever seen," said industry analyst Brian Gordon of Applied Analysis. "Wall Street is responding much more sharply, but a lot of that is based on concerns about how a global recession will hit gaming and leisure travel." Tribes applaud White House presence11/24/2008, The Desert Sun SACRAMENTO - When Barack Obama becomes president, Native Americans will have their own adviser in the White House, the president-elect's office confirmed Friday. Obama spokesman Reid Cherlin said Obama plans to establish an Advisor on Native American Policy on his senior White House staff. Richard Milanovich, chairman of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in Palm Springs, said the incoming president had discussed his plans with tribal leaders during a campaign meeting in New Mexico.
Cowlitz casino has new partner11/23/2008, The Seattle Times VANCOUVER, Wash. - A Northern California tribe is the newest partner in an effort to build a casino resort near La Center, Clark County. David Barnett, a Cowlitz Indian Tribe member who has spearheaded efforts to build the project, has sold an undisclosed portion of his interest to a California tribe. The new partner is the Paskenta Band of the Nomlaki Indians. It operates the Rolling Hills Casino, part of its 2,000-acre reservation near Corning, Calif., about 100 miles north of Sacramento.
Arrest at San Manuel casino endangers woman's sentencing deal11/22/2008, The Press-Enterprise Stacy Cheyenne Nunez-Barajas, a wealthy San Manuel tribal member sentenced earlier this month to electronic monitoring and five years probation for her role in a 2006 murder-for-hire plot, has been arrested for a violation of her sentencing agreement that could bring her 27 years in prison. Nunez-Barajas, 26, was arrested just after 9 p.m. Friday at the San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino in Highland, said San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers. Beavers said a deputy was called to the casino "in reference to trespassing." | |
Tribal members can raise concerns 11/22/2008, Yuma Sun -AZ There have been several stories in The Sun concerning the financing of the Quechan Casino Resort which did not contain factual information. The Quechan Nation normally does not respond to the local media but instead chooses to communicate with our community members through our own internal media. However, apparently some of our tribal members are choosing to use The Sun to address issues related to our tribal government.

A Lame Duck session may begin Nov. 17/18, there is speculation of a 'Lands Ominbus bill' to be introduced by Senator Harry Reid. It will carry approximately 160 bills that have previously passed the House, as well as Senate Bills. MORE AS IT EVOLVES.
