CRIT increases leases on riverfront 60 percent11/4/2008, Parker Pioneer
Leaseholders on the Colorado River Indian Tribes Bluewater Subdivision have been told by tribal officials that their leases have increased 60 percent. In a letter dated Sept. 23, it stated, CRIT "imposed a 60 percent increase for 2009 lease year for the Bluewater Subdivision, Arizona and California. Your new bill reflecting the increase will be mailed to you by Nov. 1. You (also) must notify your bonding agent of the new bond amount so they can order the necessary ride to charge your bond to the new amount required. We suggest that you do this as soon as possible so that the bond change will be done prior to your anniversary date. Please have this done by Feb. 1, 2009. If you do not wish to renew your lease you will need to notify our office immediately and vacate the premises by Dec. 31, 2008."

State to consider charge that developer mishandled Indian remains11/4/2008, The Orange County Register HUNTINGTON BEACH - State officials will consider revoking a housing development permit after a group of American Indians complained that the developer mishandled their ancestor's remains and failed to report 6,000 bags of artifacts and 10 boxes holding fragments of ancient human remains. On Nov. 13, the California Coastal Commission will hear a request that they revoke the permit for the 300-home Brightwater Hearthside Homes project, which sits atop what is believed to be an ancient burial ground and village once shared by the Gabrielino-Tongva and Juaneņo band of Mission Indians.

Questions surround proposed casino near Needles11/3/2008, Contra Costa Times
In an ambitious push to amass a gambling empire in three states, the Fort Mojave Band of Indians has proposed building its latest gaming facility in California. The project, however, has raised concerns that the casino could crush the fragile economy of Needles, a small city of approximately 5,000 residents on the shores of the Colorado River. The proposed location of the casino is only four miles west of the city's main businesses. Councilman Don McCone, who participated in meetings with the tribe to discuss the plans for the casino, said he is supportive of the project, but worries that the casino and its accompanying gas station, restaurant and hotel could turn Needles into a "ghost town." Four separate groups of city officials met with the tribe to discuss the project, but all talks stalled, he said.
