UPDATE 1-US Justice Dept tells states not to privatize lotteries10/24/2008, Rueters NEW YORK, Oct 24 (Reuters) - The U.S Department of Justice has told states that federal law bars them from privatizing lotteries, a money-raising strategy several hoped to use for investments in education, roads, bridges and the like, Indiana's Republican governor said in a statement on Friday. The federal Office of Legal Counsel determined "that states may contract with private management firms to operate their lotteries, but that the state must maintain control over significant business decisions made by the lottery," Gov Mitch Daniels said in a statement. Daniels added: "In addition, the opinion says that the management firm may not receive more than 'a de minimus interest in the profits and losses of the business.'"

(AP) - The caretaker of an 84-year-old man suffering from Parkinson's disease has been charged with leaving the man in a van while she and her husband gambled at a San Diego casino. Tessie Magan and her husband Donnie Magan have been charged with one count each of elder abuse. They pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Vista Superior Court.
Driver dies after tour bus accident at casino10/24/2008, Porterville Recorder TULE RIVER RESERVATION - A man who on Wednesday was maneuvering an Eagle Mountain Casino tour bus in the casino's north parking has died. He was 28. The man, whose name has not been disclosed pending notification of family, was driving the bus eastbound in the north dirt parking lot at about 10 mph when the bus turned in a northwesterly direction and hit the back of a parked vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reports. The bus then ran into three additional parked vehicles and continued west toward an abandoned structure
