Gambling panel plans to review Sycuan game9/6/2008, San Diego Union Tribune California's gambling watchdog agency will consider next week whether the Sycuan Indian band has violated its compact by having more slot machines than allowed under its agreement with the state. At issue are bingo-based machines that operate with one touch of a button. California Gambling Control Commission staff and federal regulators say such machines cross a line separating bingo from Nevada-style games, which are regulated differently.

Players can get credits but don't risk money9/5/2008, North County Times A North County tribe is trying to woo gamblers to its Valley Center casino by offering games online. But state gambling regulators said they haven't determined whether the games are legal, and a gambling watchdog group said the games are not properly licensed. The Pauma Band of Mission Indians launched a virtual casino on its Web site last month; it offers video slot machines, table games and card games.
Legal online poker in California is checked, at least for now9/5/2008, Sacramento Bee I had an interesting chat over coffee this morning with a chap by name of Jim Tabilio, whose Poker Voters of America is pushing legalized online poker in California, and elsewhere. Tabilio's job in real life is senior vice president for public affairs for Winning Directions, a direct mail marketing firm with offices in five cities, including Sacramento. But he's also an amateur who has played in the last five World Series of Poker events in Las Vegas. He loves the game and says flatly, he has never played online poker for money at the myriad Web sites based all over the world, except the United States where the Department of Justice has ruled it is illegal, a violation of a1961 law.
Former Lobbyist Jack Abramoff Sentenced to 48 Months in Prison 9/4/2008, United States Department of Justice WASHINGTON - Former lobbyist Jack A. Abramoff was sentenced today to 48 months in prison and ordered to pay $23,134,695 in restitution to victims based on his guilty plea to conspiracy, honest services fraud and tax evasion charges, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Friedrich of the Criminal Division and Nathan J. Hochman, Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division announced.

Class III Tribal State Gaming Compact Process9/2/2008, Federal Register SUMMARY: On July 2, 2008, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) proposed a rule to establish procedures for Indian tribes and States to submit Tribal-State compacts and compact amendments, governing the conduct of class III gaming activities on the tribe's Indian lands located within that State, for review and approval by the Secretary of the Interior (see 73 FR 37907). This notice extends the comment period for that proposed rule by 20 days, to September 22, 2008.
NIGC Announces Extension on Comment Period for After-Acquired Lands Policy9/4/2008, National Indian Gaming Commission Washington, DC September 4, 2008 - National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) Chairman Philip N. Hogen announced today that the agency is extending the time period for comments on how the NIGC should handle its decisions under the after-acquired lands provision of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), 25 U.S.C. § 2719, in light of the Department of the Interior's new regulations on that topic (73 FR 29354). In an August 11, 2008, letter to tribal leaders, Chairman Hogen had asked for input on the issue by September 5, 2008. That timeframe has now been extended to September 30, 2008.
EPA invites Public Comment 9/2/2008, Federal Register EPA invites public comments on its responses during the 30 day comment period specified below. EPA sent reponses directly to the states on August 19 and tribes on or around August 20, 2008, and plans to make final designation determinations for the 2006 24 hour PM2.5 National Ambient Air Quality Standards.
