Red Hawk casino owners sign pact with state7/1/2008, Sacramento Bee The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, owners of the new Red Hawk casino scheduled to open later this year in El Dorado County, have agreed to pay the state the largest share of slot machine winnings of any tribe in California. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Tuesday the signing of an amended compact with the tribe that runs through 2029 and allows a maximum of 5,000 slot machines at the casino.

The court also ordered Johnson to pay $2 million in damages and reimbursement of CRIT's legal fees for violating the terms of his lease, not vacating the property when the lease expired, not submitting lease payments to CRIT and not paying CRIT revenues generated by the property as stipulated in the lease.

Arnold Schwarzenegger negotiated in bad faith with the Rincon Indian band will not force the state into new negotiations with the tribe. For now. Judge William McCurine said the two sides can wait until an appeals court rules on his decision that the state can't legally demand a cut of casino profits when negotiating with tribes that want to expand gambling.

San Jacinto seeks to stop Soboba reservation expansion, citing public safety 7/1/2008, Press Enterprise The San Jacinto City Council is asking that the Bureau of Indian Affairs suspend the application of the Soboba Band of Luiseņo Indians that seeks to annex hundreds of acres the tribe wants to use to build a hotel and casino complex. The June 23 letter, signed by Mayor Jim Ayres, requests that the federal agency stop processing the application until issues of public safety are resolved. In May, the city requested that the tribe voluntarily pull its application after a series of violent incidents that culminated with the fatal shootings of three tribal members by Riverside County sheriff's deputies.

Federal Judge Tries His Hand at E-Bingo6/27/2008, News10/KXTV SACRAMENTO, CA - A federal judge got a hands-on demonstration of electronic bingo machines at the heart of a high-profile lawsuit. Five e-bingo machines were set up in a meeting room of the Hyatt Regency hotel Wednesday so that U.S. District Court Judge John A. Mendez could try them out to see for himself how they work. Bingo machine manufacturer Video Gaming Technologies and two local charities that raise money with e-bingo are suing the state attorney general to block the threatened seizure of the machines from three Sacramento-area bingo halls and one in Berkeley.

San Pasqual band says some lack Indian blood 6/28/2008, San Diego Union Tribune A long-simmering dispute within a North County Indian band boiled over yesterday when the tribe withheld casino profit checks from about 50 people, claiming that one of their ancestors was adopted and that as a result, they're not really Indians. The San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians, which operates the recently expanded Valley View Casino, also fired several people from tribal jobs and leadership positions after questioning their membership and said it would evict them from homes on tribal land.
