This Week's Question and Answer
After so long hiding away from the world and practising your art in secret. Do you find it over whelming when so many people want to talk to you and learn how to do what you do?

Monty's Answer: This is a question that I have pondered internally throughout most of my life. In the mid 1980's when there was a request from several horsemen for me to go public with my concepts, I just couldn't imagine how I could deal with it. For what seemed to be a lifetime, I had hidden my work in the knowledge that most horse industry professionals responded to my efforts with sarcasm, ridicule and disdain. It was unbearable.

It was 1985 when I decided to take a chance and conduct a demonstration with an open house here at Flag Is Up Farms. It actually went better than I expected although there were some detractors. The most apparent results came in the form of a significant reduction in the number of horses that stayed with me for training. It was apparent that the racing trainers advised owners to avoid my training efforts. That was a shock.

Because journalists were present, the Queen of England ultimately read the articles that were produced, invited me to Winsor Castle and, as they say, the rest is history. After I completed my first book, written at the request of the Queen, the world of criticism descended upon me. By this time however it was clear that I had been right in determining that the horses needed help. I clinched my teeth, bowed my neck and made my decision.

It now seems clear to me that I made the right decision and while there have been extremely tough times in my life, I have no regrets. I often say that if I had it to do over again the only change I would make is to do it earlier and with even more gusto. I love and appreciate my horses and I am an advocate for violence-free training.
At 75 I think it is safe to say that I have accepted this role for my life and I am pleased to have answered what I consider to be a clear and undeniable call for my help.

Each day now is largely a time of joy for me. I can't wait to hear from young people who want to know more about the concepts I have discovered. It is an awesome experience to sit back and realize that the world is changing, not because of me, but because I made the decision to bring forward the message of the horses. Fifteen years since the launch of my first book I am even getting positive responses from many of the top professionals in our industry.

Personally, I think food doesn't work long term as a bribe but it's great as a 'pleasant association'. I always make sure my horses have a nice net of hay in the lorry waiting for them and then the important thing is to drive them carefully. Yes, they've got to understand pressure and release but ultimately, as Monty always says, you want the horse to want to do it. One of my horses got loose at a show once and ran straight and got in his lorry as he saw it as the most comfortable place I guess!

I Never Wanted to Be Near A Horse Again

Dear Monty, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
At the weekend my order of a Dually halter and DVD arrived and I cannot put into words how much this is going to help me and my relationship with horses.

I won't go into all the details cause I know you're very busy, but in brief, my best friend was accidentally killed after being kicked in the face by her horse 8 years ago. Previous to that I had spent 20 years around horses and have always been really confident in handling them, but from that day I lost my confidence and even worse I lost my passion.  I never wanted to be near another horse again.

Then I moved from the UK to France, so we could afford for me to be a full time mother and so we could have the space and freedom I had as a child. For a while now I have had something nagging me, and I started to think that maybe I could get back into the saddle. I always try to do my best for animals, so I knew if I were to get another horse I would have to rescue one.

My chance came and we bought Verlaine, a 9.5 month old colt from a meat man in the north of France. I didn't want a youngster. I would have preferred to have an older horse; one that could be handled and mounted without too much fuss/too many bad habits, but this boy needed a home fast!
We've had him for 6 weeks now, it's been really hard working with him. He has been beaten and was very head shy.

He didn't have any basic training and had never even worn a halter until he needed to be loaded into the lorry, he would charge me in the field, stamp and snort and just be very bolshy. But, with time we have built up a bond.

Today we spent some time doing 'walk on, stand and back up'. He is a natural! I felt so good with him on the Dually. We went out on the road for a walk, we passed a neighbour who was cutting his grass, the farmer was bringing in 30 cows for milking, we had 2 cars pass us and lots of puddles! He didn't seem fazed at all, he trusted me and with the Dually I trusted him too.
Without watching your ways and methods on TV, and without the Dually halter I would not have been confident enough to take him out yet. I thought it would have been weeks, maybe even months. We still have lots of work to do, but we have the basics now. I feel so proud of him; I have a new confidence and it's great!

I want to thank you so much Monty. I never thought I would have found my love for horses again, but with your help it has been possible.

Challenge Yourself!
I want all of my students to learn to be better trainers than me! Test yourself each week as I challenge you to answer the question under 'Monty's Challenge'. I mean this. Sit down and write an answer. Don't wait for my answer next week. If you have been reading my Weekly Questions and Answers for the last six months, you should be in a position to do this. Send your answer to my team at: [email protected]

Why should you bother? Because it will help you focus. There is probably a comparable question in your life that needs answering - or will be. If you can gain insight into how to go about answering a practical question that is loosely related to your problem, this exercise will help you answer your nagging question. Then read my answer. Then read my other answers at this link:
Ask Monty. The closest answer to mine each week will be awarded a DVD but, more importantly, you will learn! That's good for you! That's good for horses!

From Deni P. - I took your lessons years ago when I first graduated high school...(many years ago...LoL) To this day people are amazed at how my foals behave and how easy I make it look when training a foal. I was breeding and raising percheron & perch/thoro cross.
I strictly believie training by earning the horses' love and respect. Unlike others who train with pain and fear...

By age 2 1/2 they were bit, saddle trained and ready toaccept a rider on their back instantly...I swear !!! I have never had any of my horses buck to get me off of them, maybe once or twice when I changed gaits, only because they didnt understand at first how to distribute their weight... I must thank you from the bottom of my heart for the way you have trained me to handle horses.

From Kathleen W Tucker - I have been a member of Monty's Online University since day one. I highly recommend joining. Great information, well presented and I learn something new every time I watch and I'm not a newbie. There's something here for every horseman. Keep up the good work.
