DCDT Candidate's Bio
Audrey A. Trainor, Ph.D.
Dr. Audrey A. Trainor is an assistant professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her research examines the preferences, needs, and strengths of culturally and linguistically diverse adolescents with disabilities as they transition into adulthood. She is interested in issues of educational equity including access to effective transition planning and education, high quality teachers, and rigorous general education curricula for students with disabilities. She is particularly concerned about the challenges schools and agencies face as they work to close the achievement gap experienced between middle-class, European American students and their peers who are children of a color, those living in poverty, and those who speak English as a second language.
For the past three years, Audrey has worked on Project Summer, a US Department of Education-funded intervention research project designed to increase adolescents' early work experiences and community involvement. The intervention was designed to engage all members in the community, including educators, students and their families, employers, and civic leaders to work together to create inclusive opportunities for employment and related experiences. Results illustrated the positive effects of purposeful planning and social connections in the employment of youth with disabilities. Audrey also teaches several courses preparing university students to teach in elementary and secondary settings, as well as several graduate-level seminars that address multicultural issues in special education. Locally, Audrey has worked with school districts in Wisconsin to develop teachers' knowledge in skills in postsecondary transition, particularly in the area of assessment. She is the coauthor of Case Studies in Transition Assessment and SOPS, a computer software package designed to help teachers create meaningful and manageable summaries of performance with students and their families.
Audrey joined CEC in 2000, and she has been a member of DCDT since 2001. In her first leadership role in DCDT, she served as the Chair of the Human Rights and Cultural Diversity Committee from 2005-2007. As chair of this committee, Audrey coauthored the most recent position statement of the organization entitled, From marginalized to maximized opportunities for diverse youths with disabilities (published in Career Development for Exceptional Individuals, 31, pp. 56-64). Since 2007, Audrey has served the organization as the chair of the Publications Committee. In this role, she has developed opportunities for book-length publications co-published by DCDT, other CEC Divisions, and lead publishing houses in the field of transition.
Prior to her work at the university level, Audrey was a high school special educator for nearly ten years in the state of North Carolina. As a classroom teacher who worked with high school students preparing to transition into adulthood she focused on high expectations and student involvement through self-determination. She continues to remain connected to the everyday world of the classroom through service projects with students and their families.
