Many states have a relatively long history of providing statewide parent leadership training for families of students with disabilities. Increasingly, more states and local school districts are offering self-determination and leadership training to youth with disabilities. However, very few opportunities exist in which parents and youth can learn important self-determination, leadership, and advocacy skills simultaneously.

Wisconsin has developed an in-depth parent/youth leadership training known as YiPPE: Youth in Partnership with Parents for Empowerment. The curriculum is available for free at http://www.wispdg.org/pl/Facilitators_Guide_5_19_09.pdf

The program offers in-depth leadership training for parents and guardians, paired with hands-on, fun learning activities for youth covering futures planning, the IEP process, self-advocacy skills, independence and health care management, appropriate social skills and much more.
