Introducing Charles!
Charles was the first missionary to enter East Timor when it became a nation in 2002. Because he is Indonesian, the East Timorese viewed him with suspicion, and even threatened his life.
But he faithfully kept serving, along with his wife after they were married in 2003. His vision was to start a school for church-planters in East Timor. The first year he had 30 students and nowhere to teach them. So he taught in the parking lot of a church next to a busy street! Soon they moved to a new town and a building of their own. This is still the only church-planter's training center in East Timor, but Charles wants to see it grow and expand. So he has come to Singapore to complete his Masters of Divinity at EAST.
As Dean of Admissions I have watched God answer many prayers for Charles to be here. From his student visa being granted early, to a full scholarship, to finding an apartment on the same street as EAST, it has been a series of miracles! And Charles has dived right into academic life too. He's even taking my class on Judges and Ruth!

Xmas in Singapore
As you can see, we missed the cold snow that blanketed the US this Christmas. Its tough serving the Lord in a tropical island. But you know us ... we don't like to complain ... we just try to make the best of the situation! In hindsight it perhaps wasn't the best idea to go to one of the busiest places in Singapore on Christmas Day. There were a ton of people on Sentosa Island, but we had a blast anyway riding these Segways. And we only hit one pedestrian! Honest!
Of course we did miss being around family and friends and traditions and familiar foods (like tamales at New Year.)

Grocery Item of the Month!
The "Live Duckmouth Clams" featured in October were a mystery. Even many Singaporeans do not know what they are. Here is a picture of these clams. Though they do resemble a duck's beak, I still couldn't tell you exactly what they are.
This month's Grocery Item is pictured on the right. Can you identify it? |
