Hi!
Family Update

Addie chopsticksOur daughter is now a teenager. Perhaps that explains her latest behavior. One of the things we like to do in our family is make up book and author names that go together. For example I came up with the book title: "ENT Surgery" by Dr. Ian Osenthroat. I thought that was pretty clever myself, but it did not win rave reviews from the critics - namely my children. Instead my (teenage) daughter came up with: "Embarrassed to Death" by M.Y. Dad. She feels this is hilarious and is telling all her friends on facebook. Of course I let her have it. "Hey",  I said, "I resemble that comment!"

It all stems from an "alleged" incident at her school. On the day in question, I (the victim's father) was on one side of the school parking lot. Addie (the alleged victim) was on the other side ... with all her friends. I pointed to myself. Then made the sign of a heart in the air. Then pointed to her. She alleges that this show of affection, in front of her friends no less, created long term and lasting consequences to her sense of self-worth. And she further alleges that this incident has happened on more than one occasion. In my defense I have to say ... Hey, can you keep a secret? If you promise not to tell another soul, I'll let you in on my plea. Ahem. To the charge of embarrasing my teenage daughter with public signs of affection ... I plead ... Guilty! ... Ha! And I enjoyed it!

Learning More

You may know this already. I am sure I am not telling you anything new when I say that a teacher learns a lot more than his students. I am learning so much more preparing new classes than I ever remember learning as a student. This is especially true now that I am teaching more new classes than I ever have before.

My class on the book of Genesis has just finished. While I enjoyed the content and the students, I struggled with fitting such a lot of material into 10 weeks of two-hour classes. I not only learned much more about Genesis, I also learned how I would teach it differently next time.

My class on the Poetic and Wisdom Books of the Old Testament is going really well. I studied engineering, so I am not much of a poet! But I have been learning a lot as we have gone through the books of Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and (whisper) Song of Songs! I particularly enjoyed the last two--probably two of the most misunderstood and ignored books in the Bible. I am actually preaching from Ecclesiastes this Sunday. (You can access the sermon at www.cicfamily.com.)

The class I have just started is "Theology of Missions", which traces the development of World Missions right through the Bible. Again this is an area I had not taught before, so I am gaining much more than my students as I do the background preparation, and then plan how to present the material.

Grocery Item of the Month!
Duckmouth Clam
Last month's Vegetarian Meat did not trip many people up. It is a meat substitute made from soybeans, or something like that. I have tried the vegetarian meat, and I can honestly say ... that some people enjoy it!

Have you seen this month's item in your grocery store? Have you ever tried these?

We couldn't do this without you!
