| Our People, Our Communities |
Here are just some of the ways Reliance staff members have been making a difference in Hampton Roads:
Reliance Staffing & Recruiting sponsored the Salvation Army's Silent/Live Auction and Fashion Show on November 5. WVEC's Vanessa Coria was the Fashion Show Emcee and WVEC's Lasalle Blanks was the Auctioneer. Clothes were provided by Dillard's MacArthur Center. Reliance Staffing & Recruiting's sister company, COATS Staffing Software, sponsored a build for the Roc Solid Foundation for a 4-year-old girl battling A.L.L. leukemia on November 11 and 12. Sherry Sale of our Newport News office recently participated in a motorcycle charity ride for senior citizens that raised more than $2,400 in one afternoon. If you'd like to learn about local charity rides, one place to check is the Tidewater Harley Owners Group (HOG) events page. Sam Morton of our Newport News office delivered turkey dinners to needy families for Thanksgiving with the Williamsburg Mennonite Church. Members of the church donated a box of groceries and a turkey for each family in need, and volunteers like Sam delivered them. Nancy Simonelli of our Virginia Beach office wants to let everyone know that the Kiwanis Club's Kids Priority One program is selling raffle tickets for a week in the Caribbean! One lucky person will win a week in a condo in St. Kitts and $1,000 spending money. Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50, and the drawing will be held at the Dockside restaurant on Dec. 12. For more information, email the program.

We hope you had a safe, happy Thanksgiving. We're very thankful for the chances we've had to work with you this year, and we're looking forward to a busy holiday season. This month's newsletter includes advice on questions you can ask in a job interview to learn how a candidate can apply what they've done before to what your job calls for. We also look at how to make Veterans Day last beyond just the 11th of November. And we discuss how to find balance in your management style. As your partner in employment, we want to help you build a stronger, more successful business. If you ever have questions about human resources or other employment issues, please feel free to contact us. We'd be happy to share our expertise. Lynn Connor, Vice President

Hiring
|
Almost nobody likes job interviews (everyone who does is in the staffing and recruiting business!), but they're an important part of the hiring process. You can help your interviews become a better tool for finding the right fit between your firm and potential candidates by asking better questions.
It's time to go beyond, "So... what made you apply for this job?" and ask some questions that will tell you more about a candidate's history and their personality. We've divided these questions into two groups: stories and queries.
Stories can provide specific examples of how a candidate has performed under the sorts of conditions that are likely to arise in the position for which you're interviewing them. They can also give examples of a particular skill or talent a candidate has; for instance, instead of asking "Do you know Photoshop?", try "Tell me about a time when you used Photoshop and how you used it."

You can use queries to get to know your candidates better as people and workers, to get an idea of what they value, how they perceive themselves and others and how they view their career and your position's potential role in it. Here are some suggestions of questions to ask.

Helping Hampton Roads
|
Veterans Day is a nationally recognized holiday that most people have off, and that's because it's important to have a day to say "thank you" to all the men and women who have served our country.
But even better than saying "thank you" one day a year is helping veterans find jobs, especially in this economy. Hiring veterans isn't just a good thing to do, it's good business, for many reasons-especially in this area.

Management
|
It's not always easy to be a manager. You've got a lot to keep track of, and the pressure's on you to get the most out of your team. So it might seem natural to go to extremes sometimes, to push as hard as you can or to back all the way off, in the interests of maximizing the result. But as in so many other things in life, often the greatest rewards come when you choose the middle path. We're going to look at a couple of examples of how going too far in either direction can reduce your efficacy as a manager. A major source of complaints from employees is micromanaging, or inserting yourself too much into your employees' work. However, not managing enough is just as dangerous, and its negative signs aren't as easy to read. Conflict in the workplace is another area where a middle path can be tough to find. While it might seem idyllic to envision a workplace where no conflict ever occurs, that's just not going to happen. Besides, conflict can be a good thing: it can bring existing issues between employees and within the workplace to light. The trick is being able to handle conflict among your employees in a balanced way.
