Here are just some of the ways
Reliance staff members have been making a difference in Hampton Roads:

Reliance Staffing is one of the sponsors of the Salvation Army's upcoming Silent/Live Auction and Fashion Show. The show will be held Saturday, November 5, from 11:30 am to 2 pm, at the Hilton Norfolk Airport Hotel. WVEC's Vanessa Coria will be the Fashion Show Emcee and WVEC's Lasalle Blanks will be the Auctioneer. Clothes will be provided by Dillard's MacArthur Center. Tickets are available by calling Nannette Motil at the Salvation Army at 757-965-90190 or emailing her.  Tickets are $40 and will be available through November 2.

Nancy Simonelli
of our Virginia Beach office wants to let everyone know that the Kiwanis Club's Kids Priority One program is selling raffle tickets for a week in the Caribbean! One lucky person will win a week in a condo in St. Kitts and $1,000 spending money. Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50, and the drawing will be held at the Dockside restaurant on Dec. 12. For more information, email the program

What a month! As the leaves finally start to change outside, we're finishing a month of major changes here at Reliance Staffing & Recruiting.

Of course, the most obvious change is our new name and logo, but the deeper change is what that name and logo reflect: our new depth of expertise in high-level recruiting, thanks to our acquisition of DRA Recruiting & Staffing Solutions.

Change is often part of doing business, so we prepared a micro-series of posts about managing change. We also noted a new change in hiring trends in the South: a lack of "medium-skilled" workers.

As your partner in employment, we want to help you build a stronger, more successful business. If you ever have questions about human resources or other employment issues, please feel free to contact us. We'd be happy to share our expertise.

RSReliance Staffing Services has purchased DRA Recruiting & Staffing Solutions (formerly Don Richard Associates). This acquisition gives us a depth of expertise in top-level and executive recruiting to match our proven strength in industrial and clerical staffing, and will give companies in Hampton Roads one place to source all of their hiring and personnel needs.

To reflect this comprehensive capability, we have changed our name from Reliance Staffing Services to Reliance Staffing & Recruiting.

If you've relied on Reliance Staffing Services to fill your industrial, clerical and hospitality positions quickly and dependably, now you have access to senior executive recruiters with proven expertise in search and placement. The level of customer service you've experienced and your main point of contact with Reliance will remain the same.

With our purchase of DRA Recruiting & Staffing Solutions, we gained the incredible expertise, knowledge and depth of experience of its two recruiters: Sheila-Ann (Sam) Morton and Liza Parker. We're thrilled to have them both on board, and we wanted to give you the chance to get to know them.

Sam MortonSam Morton brings an impressive background in business and recruiting, a fantastic work ethic and a surprising love of a briny sport to Reliance, and we're very glad to have her on board.

"...I had always let interested client companies know when one of my regional managers was seeking a new position. The thought of getting paid for it never occurred to me. I agreed to give it a try and here I am."

Liza Parker
While Sam handles our upper-level recruiting on the Peninsula, Liza Parker leads the charge on the Southside. Like Sam, Liza has a strong business background and a love for helping others. She brings lots of energy to our team, and we're looking forward to many great years with her.

"I love the relationships and trust I have built with both my clients and candidates over the years. I am such a 'people person' and I personally thrive on these lasting relationships...and now friendships."

Change

Earlier this month, we did a two-part series on change in the workplace (for rather obvious reasons). Of course, managing change is a huge topic; entire graduate-level degrees can be obtained on organizational change. We know we're just scratching the surface with this two-parter, but we hope the info will be helpful and might inspire you to look into larger bodies of knowledge on change.

There are a lot of different frameworks for thinking about change; John Kotter's 8-step plan is one of the major ones. We've decided to go with something we call the 4 Cs. No, it has nothing to do with purchasing diamonds; it's four things that are absolutely necessary for successful change in the workplace.

Is the South Facing a Shortage of "Middle-Skilled" Workers?

Job Opening newspaperAccording to the National Skills Coalition, the answer is a surprising "yes." While unemployment remains high overall, a gap between available jobs and available job-seekers has appeared in the "middle-skills" category.

The National Skills Coalition released a report (PDF) to a meeting of the Southern Governors Association in August, showing that 51 percent of the jobs in the American South fall into the "middle-skills" category, but only 43 percent of job-seekers fall into that category.
