Well, the leaves might not be anywhere near turning yet (in fact, it's still practically summer-hot), but there are lots of pumpkin-themed beverages and candy available now, so that's a good enough welcome-to-fall sign for us.

For Reliance, this month has been about building. We collaborated with the Roc Solid Foundation to build a backyard playset for a wonderful little boy who's battling cancer. We also honored Sept. 11 and thought about staffing's role in rebuilding after tragedies. And we're building up to a big announcement coming your way very soon (details to come next week!).

As your partner in employment, we want to help you build a stronger, more successful business. If you ever have questions about human resources or other employment issues, please feel free to contact us. We'd be happy to share our expertise.

On September 16 and 17, a squad of volunteers from Reliance Staffing (and our awesome sister software company, COATS) came together to bring some sunshine into the life of a little boy recovering from cancer.

Working with the Roc Solid Foundation, we sponsored and built a three-story playset with a slide, three swings and a little picnic table for the amazing Wes. It was definitely a team effort and took two sessions of building: one on Friday night, putting most of the set together, then another on Saturday morning, when we put the set in place and created a lovely mulch-filled area for it.

Wes' Fight
This is Wes.

And this is Wes coming down the slide of his new playset!

Thanks to everyone at Reliance, COATS and Roc Solid who came together for this build, and thanks to Wes's family for giving us the chance to help.

Investigation"Every unfortunate event does not give rise to lawsuit," the great legal scholar and daytime-TV fixture Judge Mills Lane has been quoted as saying. However, if an unfortunate event happens during the course of business, you could be at risk for a lawsuit, especially if you don't investigate claims yourself.

Nearly 90 percent of workers who eventually file a lawsuit against their employers made their complaints initially to a supervisor or other company representative, according to a recent study from the National Whistleblowers Center. Clearly, those 90 percent didn't feel that their complaints were taken seriously or handled properly. And while you can't make everyone happy, you can take steps to reduce your risk of a lawsuit resulting from a complaint.

Workplace injuries eBookResponding to Workplace Injuries
If your company doesn't have an on-site clinic, workplace injuries can be challenging: do you treat on-site and risk liability, or send the injured worker off-site, despite the cost and lost work? Click here to learn how Reliance makes it easy to respond to injuries on the job.

No Unemployed eBookHow "No Unemployed" Hiring Policies Hurt Companies
As more job postings include the phrase "only currently employed applicants will be considered," this eBook shows why that's a bad policy, not just for job-hunters but for companies as well. Click here to get your free eBook.

September 11: Mourning, Marking, Celebrating
Sept. 11 stampAs much as September 11 is noted for what we lost as a nation, it can also be seen as a day to mark our determination not just to survive but to rebuild and come back stronger. In the 10 years since the attacks, we've also had to rebuild our economy in the wake of financial desolation. And it might have taken longer than we'd like, but we are starting to come back stronger from that, too.
