Our People,
Our Communities

Here are just some of the ways
Reliance staff members have been making a difference in Hampton Roads:

Felicia Copeland, our on-site representative at Canon, is a member of the national community service organization Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Franklin-Tri County Chapter. Earlier this month, Felicia and her sisters cheered the athletes of the Special Olympics.

Catherine Cantieri of our Virginia Beach office has been named Volunteer of the Month by the Portsmouth Humane Society for her willingness to do the especially grubby chores.

We hope you had a safe, fun, relaxing Memorial Day weekend. Now that we're back to work, the summer season has officially begun. For many businesses, that means an increase in demand; for others, a slower pace. Regardless of how summer affects your business, Reliance can provide you with the workers you need, when you need them, for as long as you need them.

Social Media: The New Wild West
Social media flyer titleAs part of Reliance Staffing's mission to be partners in employment with our clients, we like to bring experts in to discuss issues that affect every company. Last week, Reliance was privileged to have our friend Diane Geller from Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore present a seminar on the legal aspects of social media.

Social media is a major player in communications today. Yes, it allows us to share trivial details about our lives, but it also allows us to share important information--such as Osama Bin Laden's death--incredibly quickly and with impressive reach to others. It's also a major economic force; Facebook alone has a market valuation of around $70 billion, which is more than the GDP of almost 2/3 of the world's nations.

Keeping Your Business's Fuel Costs Down
Fuel prices
Fuel costs have been going up recently, and with summer on the way, they're likely to keep increasing. Not only does the rising cost of gas affect you as a consumer, it affects your business, especially if you make deliveries or have multiple offices.

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do to affect the price of gas itself. But you can manage your use of it for business purposes, and you might discover some efficiencies you can keep using when--if the cost of gas ever goes down again.
How To Make Your Business Unsuccessful and Miserable

Blame gameIf you've wondered how best to hamstring your employees, alienate your strongest players and otherwise guarantee the failure of your business, organizational psychologist and consultant Ben Dattner believes he's found the secret: create a culture of blame. Dattner recently released a book detailing the damage that blame does to effectiveness called The Blame Game: How Hidden Rules of Credit and Blame Determine Our Success or Failure.

According to Dattner, credit and blame are rarely assigned in a fair, consistent manner in the workplace. And the more that people focus on how to avoid blame and garner credit, the more that office morale suffers. Not only do employees start taking unethical measures such as stealing credit and shifting blame, they focus more on office politics than on their actual work - and honestly, can you think of anything less productive and morale-boosting than office politics?
