Our People, Our Communities
Here are just some of the ways Reliance staff members have been making a difference in Hampton Roads:
Reliance Staffing and our sister software company COATS Staffing Software have scheduled two builds of playsets for children recovering from cancer in partnership with the ROC Solid Foundation, through the foundation's "Play It Forward" program, for later this year. Catherine Cantieri of our Virginia Beach office volunteers every Saturday at the Portsmouth Humane Society, walking dogs, doing laundry, washing dishes and cuddling the occasional bunny.

March is primarily known for two things: a boisterous holiday and a sports tournament. Neither of those have anything to do with your business, though. Or do they? Over on the Reliance blog, we've discussed how some minor mindset adjustments can enhance your business's luck, and how you can use the NCAA playoffs (or any other major event) to help boost morale in your office. We've also talked about a phenomenon that might surprise you: manufacturing is picking up in the United States, but the pool of skilled labor isn't keeping pace. In fact, 40% of the nation's skilled laborers are due to retire in the next five years. We've got some ideas for keeping your business from feeling a possible labor pinch.
If you'd like to learn how to grow your business this spring, visit our blog or contact us. And let's all hope for some warmer weather!

Make Your Business's Own Luck
"Luck" is often used interchangeably for "random occurrence," but that's not the most accurate way to look at it. Because while randomness has no meaning attached to it (it's neither good or bad, it just "is"), luck is often accompanied by a judgment: good luck, bad luck, dumb luck, etc. So luck isn't just random occurrence, it's the meaning of that occurrence for us. And that's actually a good thing, because meaning puts luck into the realm of what we can influence.
British professor Dr. Richard Wiseman conducted a 10-year study on luck, investigating how people who considered themselves lucky differed from those who considered themselves unlucky, and he was able to find four key differences in their behavior:

Managing "Madness" in the Workplace
Each year, the NCAA men's basketball tournament triggers news releases and blog posts centering on lost productivity during such a major event, so you might have been dreading this time of year. Well, the good news is that not only is the lost productivity fairly minimal, but March Madness can be useful for building camaraderie and morale, if you manage your office madness right.

Manufacturing Springs Ahead--But Can Skilled Labor Keep Up?
The Institute for Supply Management reported that the composite index of new orders and manufacturing activity reached its highest point this February since May 2004. The group also reported that the manufacturing sector has been growing for 19 months straight. Good news, right? Almost. Manufacturing is growing, but the supply of skilled laborers seems to be shrinking. Employment analysts have identified skilled trades as among the most difficult jobs to fill in the U.S., and many employers are reporting economic consequences of a skilled labor shortage. Add to that the news that up to 40% of the skilled labor force will retire in the next five years, and you might be starting to panic about how you'll fill your manufacturing positions.

Good TV, Bad Policy: Handling Conflict at Work
Another season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" is underway, and once again, it seems as if the real reward is being fired by Donald Trump so you don't have to spend any more time in those awful boardroom sessions. But while squabbling celebrities might make for entertaining TV, they can make for an awful work situation in the real world. Even if the conflict is limited to just two employees, it affects the morale of everyone in the office, and can create an atmosphere of distrust and even sabotage. So as a manager, how do you handle employee conflict, short of going Trump and declaring that all the involved parties are "Fired!"?
